tower daily tip number two play a game of find it flip it daily and tip number three provide your dog a treat towel pretzel daily so a lot of the time when i'm trying to help people navigate why they're dealing with these specific behavior problems whether that's eating a plant in a super annoying way every single day stealing slippers barking when you're trying to have a meeting on zoom barking out windows digging massive holes in backyards most of these behavior issues all stem from boredom human beings are very good at fulfilling our dog's physical exercise needs because we enjoy going out with them however we're really really bad generally speaking at fulfilling our dog's mental enrichment needs on a daily basis don't underestimate the power of mental enrichment not only can keeping your dog occupied with their brain throughout the day prevent some behavior problems from developing but it also is sort of a sneaky way of shortening up some of your walks if you are dealing with less than ideal weather conditions like we are here in vancouver providing a variety of mental stimulation on a daily basis is very much equivalent to a long walk so if you're lazy at least give your dog the option to do some of these do-it-yourself ideas all right let's get started with today's three training tips what you're going to need for today's video is a variety of things including breakable treats or kibble you're going to need tupperware containers maybe six to ten of them a whole whack load an array of recycling items a towel both big and small and a good sense of humor to record your dog while they're trying to figure out these freaking puzzles that you give them tip number one is to prepare your dog a leaning treat tower made of recycling now most people have recycling on hand in their home all the time so this is obviously free and easily accessible dogs are natural scavengers they like to use their nose to locate food so if we give them an outlet for this on a daily basis through some of these enrichment games then we're less likely to see that same behavior outside on walks now if your dog is super food motivated they're going to go to town with this game if your dog is more on the passive side whether it's a lower food drive or lower problem solving interest like cedar you'll find that these games are really quite difficult for them to participate in so always make it easy to start and then work your way to harder and harder versions in this particular one you are going to go through your recycling and make sure that you get rid of any small plastics that are easily chewed and swallowed you want to make sure that you are using bigger plastics that they can't really eat that they more are trying to open up like a salad container and lots of thicker plastics that there's no chance of them consuming you can also use a big box or a paper bag to put these things in as you'll see here in this video when i stash a whole bunch of goodies into a pile of recycling for mr cedar if you want to work on some training at the same time you could ask your dog to sit stay while you stash the recycling container with all the stuff that you're trying to hide from them and then release them to go find it if you have a nervous dog again start easy maybe just an open bag with some treats in it for them to learn to stick their head in you'll see here with cedar he's very cautious of this game he's sort of at a time in his life where he thinks everything is a trap and so he doesn't really participate very willingly i have to coax him and coax him and help him and engage with the items so you're seeing a harder version of this than you would likely see with your own dog most dogs will dive right in looking for that food something important that i really should add is you should only be playing this game with your dog when they are supervised because it is easy for them to get frustrated by this game and start chewing on plastic and consuming little bits of it again you want to try to deter from actually chewing the plastic and see if you can get them to seek out the food by making the food readily available never play this game and then walk out of the room and leave them unsupervised with all of these items you're probably thinking what the hell annika why are we doing this it's mentally exhausting for your dog to try to scavenge and locate food they also have to overcome some nervousness or apprehension or confusion about whether they should or shouldn't put their head in or towards these items recycling also makes all kinds of noises and it has lots of different textures which some dogs aren't accustomed to so this is basically providing them a food puzzle where you're able to encourage them to use their brains and use their natural scavenging instincts which you're welcome are very very tiring for your dog go ahead and give it a try you can do it once a day you can do it once a week and you can do it once a month if you have a very high energy dog doing this every day would absolutely be a good game to play alright let's get to tip number two play a game of find it flip it with your dog daily now this one's a little easier a little lazier and also a little harder for most dogs so don't be shy to get creative with how far apart you put these containers find it flip it is basically the idea that you put a handful of treats or a couple of kibbles under a whole bunch of different sized tupperware containers you can also go with salad bowls if you want to if it's harder material that to lift then it will be a harder game for them to play so the smaller the tupperware the easier the heavier the bowl or the container the harder it is for your dog you can basically set these little containers all across your living room or even into multiple rooms and help your dog use their nose to try to track where the food might be if you feed your dog kibble for their meals this is a wonderful way of practicing getting them to work for their food on a daily basis which again you're welcome is going to tire them out and make them require less walking exercise outside of your home if you want to play this game outside with your dog you can do the same thing with containers i would just recommend that you do heavier like pot style containers instead of tupperware containers this game is best played inside on hardwood or laminate slippery floors because then they have to push the container all over with their nose and their feet to try to flip it to get the food out if you play it on grass or carpets it's a little easier for them to get the food right away which doesn't make it last as long and then is not as tiring for them what better use for all those mismatched tubberware containers that we all have lounging around our kitchens if your dog doesn't work for the kibble and is kind of passive about this game you can put higher value treats under the tubberware cedar here doesn't love this game that much he gets a little bored of it so i do have to put more than one kibble or treat under each container to sort of motivate him to entertain the game you can also try hiding toys under the tupperware containers if your dog is not food motivated if your dog's like i don't know what we're supposed to do here i don't want to play this game what's with all the tumblr like mr cedar is you see me trying to encourage him by tapping the container slightly lifting the containers up so they're leaning against some kibbles so you get some for free to get some motivation going and praise praise praise encourage them while they're playing these puzzle games to try to help them understand they're allowed to do what they're doing and you're encouraging them to do what they're doing have fun with that one let's get to tip number three all right lastly training tip number three is to offer your dog a treat towel pretzel on a daily basis this one is very similar to the last two tips however it's great for a small space if you're traveling and you don't have much equipment with you you don't want to travel with your tupperwares this one is sort of a go-to easy my dog is bored or i have guests over and i need to entertain him you are going to have two towels one small one and one big one you're gonna put some treats in the small one as seen here and then you're gonna wrap that small one into a knot then add more treats to the big towel and tie that towel into a knot or a pretzel hand your dog that big towel use lots of praise to encourage them to sort of locate and problem solve dig at and play with this towel to make all that food shake out i will quickly say if you have a chronic chewer be careful with this game you do not want to encourage them to actually rip at or chew up the towels cedar towards the end of this exercise it does start to bite at the towel a little bit so i interrupt him and i unroll it a little bit so that he gets a little bit more reinforcement without having to ruin the towel altogether all right that's it for the three training tips one quick suggestion and really really important reminder is that it's not safe to play any of these games when your dog is unsupervised plastic can be consumed and dangerous tupperware containers can do the same and towels are no different so just make sure you're only playing these games when your dog is supervised okay people that's all i have for you today i hope you found today's tips helpful listen it's a weird time your dog is having a lot more time at home with people for most dogs and so that can cause a lot of restless behaviors if you do these once to three times a day to help your dog keep some anxiety some frustration some boredom at bay they will be calmer in a different way from all of that mental enrichment that you've provided them most of all have fun watching your dog problem solve it's very interesting to see how they react to things as you noted with cedar who is scared of the leaning tower of recycling if you want to please tag us in videos of your dog playing with these three tips and thank you again for watching don't
