hey folks So today we're going to go on a little bit of an adventure with 18-week old puppy Axel and Spencer and we're going to head into the local Cabellas to get him used to different sights and sounds in the store as well as practice some of his skills in a new environment so let's get started it's amazing what you can accomplish both socialization and training wise in just 10 to 20 minutes in a novel environment so today I'll walk you through how I might structure a service dog Prospect socialization experience what types of things we want to expose a young service dog Prospect to and what we as trainers are looking to accomplish in this sort of session we start by letting Axel relieve himself it's important before going in any store to let your service dog or dog in general have a chance to relieve especially if they're young we don't want any accidents in the store beginning to teach them to potty on Q can be incredibly helpful to know that they're empty before going in I'm hoping to have a potty training for service dog prospects course out later this year or early next year so stay tuned for that no how Spencer stays in one spot and has axle Circle around her this will be important in his role as a guide dog later in life so that his blind Handler can easily locate his waist to pick up it also hastens the relief process nice job little dude next we're going to hang out outside the store for a few minutes and allow Axel to watch the people walking in and out don't be in a rush to get in give the dog a chance to acclimate for some dogs watching people enter and exit might be the entire socialization experience for that day for dogs that are ready for it you can people watch and once your dog is comfortable prac practice a few known skills like hand touches or simple find it games here Spencer allows Axel to look around at the new environment and then marks and reinforces her offered attention if you want to learn more about increasing your dog's desire to check in with you without asking I'll put that video up in the right hand corner of the screen and down in the description below for you to watch later as Axel gets more comfortable we head over to sit by the entrance doors being me of the entrance also allows them to watch heavy do slam or sliding doors open and close a few times without getting startled by this new experience once we go inside I have very little expectations for my young pup which is a big reason why I choose pet friendly stores for puppies while they may be doing great with Loos leash walking at home I expect that their behavior won't be perfect in this new environment we're here for the socialization experience and not for obedience practice this type of more formal Public Access trip can come later on in training while we may practice a few skills in the store that is not the focus of this trip we want to also keep the trip short and successful F the first time they go into some place new it's totally fine to observe outside walk around for a minute or two inside and then head out short and positive is our goal here Spencer does exactly what she was doing outside which is rewarding him for checking in with her while he lays down politely and observes his surroundings okay so now let's talk about some of the things we want to expose the puppy to and how your pup can do and see so much in just one store but before we do that if you're getting value from this video head on to down and Boop that like button doing so positively reinforces me for making these videos and lets me know that you want to see more cool if Jake and I would be so grateful okay back to our field trip our goal with any exposure is to make it a positive experience we can pair exposure to new items with food or play it's helpful to have played shaping games my favorite being the touch the butt game it's my silly name taken from the Finding Nemo movie for shaping a dog on a new object every day and teaching them it's fun to go explore new items having this background can help the dog view novelty as potential ways to earn reinforcement creating an optimistic pop here's a quick example of that game with a young golden puppy who's being marked and reinforced for interacting with a new object the puppy leads the learning builds confidence around novelty and the session ends with him offering to jump on the new item exactly what we're looking for okay back to Axel regarding exposure the first thing there will be a lot of is other people your pup can be exposed to many types of people all in one session if your dog is shy you can choose to go to a store at an off peak time if your dog is ready for more exposure you'll likely see all sorts of people including children which if you don't have children of your own can be one of the tougher ones to socialize a young pup to so finding places they can observe children like a store or at a playground from afar can be helpful we will also be able to expose them to stairs there are many different types of stairs and I typically like to expose them to outdoor stairs to start and then work up to more challenging indoor stairs types of stairs include open back stairs stairs with drop off stairs with different textures wide stairs narrow stairs shiny stairs and much more while we don't want a young puppy to do a ton of stairs it is important that they have early exposure once they're physically capable of climbing a flight next we can expose them to elevators young Axel wasn't quite ready to ride this type of elevator that has a glass panel overlooking the store so we chose to just watch the doors open and close and watch the people going in and out we also got a chance to watch escalators which can be concerning for some dogs Sportsman stores can be a great place to expose your dog to a variety of different animals up close which can be truly scary for some dogs here we were able to expose Axel to Wildlife he might see locally like bears and deer as well as ones he might see at a zoo like roseros and Bongo here Axel gets the opportunity to not only observe the wildlife but also practice settling and watching the store from the upper level a vantage point this Cabellas also has a small aquarium which not only offers exposure to fish but also to a tighter darker environment and speaking of a tighter environment a store is a great place to practice walking between racks and aisles introducing a young dog to fitting into tighter spaces with their human Cabelas also has crates so we practice having Axel go in and out of Novel crates good job now go back in there good boy one more in there good job super yes good finally dog friendly stores can be a great place to observe other dogs who are also shopping we only saw one on this trip but it's great for your dog to learn that they might see other dogs in unexpected locations and to teach them to look at you when they see them if your dog doesn't currently see other dogs as a reason to engage with you check out my video on the engage disengage game that I'll link up above so that you can help your pup learn neutrality around other dogs throughout this socialization experience we asked for a few basic obedience behaviors like hand touches a few steps of loose leash walking and sits and downs these are things Axel was already well versed in we supported his success in this more challenging environment by practicing away from people distractions and with higher rates of reinforcement make sure you're only practicing known behaviors in this new environment with your young puppy once we've packed all of this into one trip it's time to exit the store Axel was interested in jumping up onto this vehicle so we let him check it out then it was time to have a nice walk on a long line giving your dog a chance to sniff around and do dog stuff is an important way for your dog to decompress after working hard in the store another great way to do this is to give them a nice Chew in their crate it's really important that we support the whole dog and not just the work you can even do a decompression walk or go on a hike before you go into the store to help get the sillies out so overall we had a short successful trip with lots of exposure opportunities remember that you can always increase or decrease the difficulty level for your puppy by increasing or decreasing their proximity to different novel stimuli even just sitting in your car and watching people pass by while your pup eats a topple can be a great first socialization experience and if you like this
