yes all right so Burly is about 13 weeks now potty training's good crate training's good everything's going great now we're going to start engagement this is the very first thing I'm going to do with him before we start obedience training traditional obedience heel work place work Sit Stay Down stay Etc so engagement is the dog looking at you so what I want from him ultimately is for him to look at me to get what he wants which is very very crucial so we're going to start with with this today and the reason why I'm filming this whole series in my house is because I want you guys to relate to what I'm doing I'm not in my big facility with tons of other dogs and all the equipment around I have my no bad dog treat pouch I have my beef liver I have my dog I'm in my kitchen so what we're going to do is we're going to take our food and we're going to start rewarding him so one thing that we haven't gone over is our reward marker which is going to be yes so this is very similar to anybody who worked on clicker training so basically when the word yes comes out of my mouth he's going to get paid it's really important that you do this in the early stages because what it does is it helps capture a behavior faster so the minute he hears yes he knows that he's done something right and then yes he gets paid you guys don't have to do this sometimes it's hard for people to stay consistent with this I don't use clickers cuz I simply lose them but with him I am going to do a yes marker I did not do it with Lakota we turned out okay so first thing you guys want to do yes good your dog looks at you you pay now the goal of this is you're going to add distractions or some sort of reward next to him like this yes and then he looks at you instead of the food and then he gets paid so what I'm doing is I'm teaching him to look at me to get what he wants so we're going to hold here he's looking at me we could continually good so the good yeah good and the yeah is like a keep going command like yeah you're doing it you're doing it yes is when it ends so yes is when the behavior in the sequence may end um it's kind of a little fancy but super simple so this is something that you guys can do 5 10 minute sessions throughout the day when you have time just work on that engagement again hey this is what you want it's going to go here yes he locks in on me and like anything that we do we're going to build the duration and we're going to build the distractions so in the future the next couple days I might thow maybe even tonight I'll start throwing kibble on the ground and I won't let the dog have it until they look at me and I'll just just show you what that looks like so just again thinking out loud getting a little creative I'll put the food here I'll step on it with my foot and now watch this might take a second so we might timlapse this but he's got to look at me to get what he wants and I'm going to pay him from here yes yes good Burley yes good so again putting the food down he's sniffing he sniffing he sniffing he went back to me bang he got paid this creates so much value in your relationship so much value in your training and again that's why you see all these really fancy dogs doing all this stuff and that's why you see a lot of dogs at home not paying attention and not looking at you is because you don't work on it getting a dog to look at you takes skill getting a dog to pay attention to you takes a lot of experience working with the dog like people don't realize that that sometimes you get lucky right you get a you get a unicorn dog and that happens um so we're going to keep working on this see how his head was a little over here we want it right on us so move my head he moves yes good nice work so again little bit heavier distraction here I'm going to move my hand up waiting yes good hope you guys are liking this series so far it's been really fun growing this boy up special special boy it's also important as you guys are doing this to transition the food reward and where it's coming from so you want to randomize where the food is actually getting delivered from don't always go from one side cuz he's going to expect that the objective is for him to lock in on you and you only and then he gets paid however he gets paid don't don't let them fixate and get into a routine so one other thing you can do to advance this after you've done this for a couple days is you can get your dog in a leash and start throwing food away from the dog instead of under your feet to then refocus the dog back to you okay so what we're going to do is we're going to show him what we have we're going to throw it so see how he's going for the food here guys I'm just holding with the leash I'm not correcting him I'm just holding with the leash now it may take 5 10 15 20 30 seconds um 5 minutes you're just holding here and you're teaching him that if he yes good if he comes back to Handler her me he's actually going to get paid with the same amount of food yes good so there's food in front of him so I could cue him Bly yes good that's um you there's no problem with doing that I'm just being kind of hard on him a little bit not queuing him at all but you certainly could to make it easier you do that again oops throw the food out he sees the food it's important that they see the food oh I want that yes good you see that so he's going to check in with me now the more you do this he's going to see the food yes and then he's just going to look at you yes good nice work all right lunch time for this this boy good job buddy so go guys do this 5 10 minutes at a rip just like I just did give them little tiny pieces of food and that's the beginning to engagement you guys are going to see this huge when we transfer this outside any obedience you guys do with your dogs start in a very small clinical non-distracted environment transfer to outside in your backyard garage basement or driveway before you go out into a long walk or you go out into your neighborhood so we're going to start here yes good now this is the first time we're working outside with him on engagement so it might take him a second he's also eating grass at the same exact time which is you know normal puppy stuff now it's important to keep your dog on a leash right now just because in this exercise we don't run them running off yes so anytime your dog looks at you while you're outside you're going to start developing that payment system just like you did inside it might be a heart yes might be a hard transfer for them it might be difficult for them to understand this it might be easy he's in between right now yes good lakota's behind him messing around with the Frisbee this is like a graveyard out here of stuffies yes I'm going to do this again we're going to spread the food out yes he looked at Lakota natural distraction Lakota moved yes so you got to copy and paste what you did inside in the beginning you guys saw it wasn't this easy he didn't look at me at all yes now outside you're going to have to start over yes good yes good now we're going to hold this good good keep going good keep going good move around a little bit good this is all going to come into place and we put things into motion into heal work into place work into obedience yes it's a very important part we talked about not including this into the series or putting this out of the video because it may see too easy or even too simple but yes it is a very important part that you guys might not be able to transition uh for the next step yes good good and if you guys are watching this for the first time remember this is going to be a series so we're going to do an entire puppy series from yes start to finish kind of white belt to black belt with this dog from knowing absolutely nothing to being really good back to me holding you could cue this yes so queuing would be saying your dog's name giving him a squeak yes so I have the no bad dogs treat pouch which has the squeaker included which might be helpful for some of the more this is a Masti so he's kind of food motivated docile as you can tell the difference with Lota here pushing us with the fridge be pushing us with the ball Etc he's looking away yes good good so now what we can start doing guys is advancing this out a little bit more so I'll start moving a little bit yes go moving a little bit stuffy yes good all right now let's just show you guys what this will start to look like before we get into the heal command before we even get into leash pressure video just want to show you what this might look like if I just naturally move forward watch this yes yes good pay good we're going to do this again coming back the other way just super simple one or two steps good burle good burle yes good so you guys are already starting to see I create engagement I start moving forward naturally he's looking at me yes because I taught him how to engage with me so a lot of people try to do this backwards is they go outside they teach their dog heels then they teach their dog to look at them not queuing anything just walking starting to move with the dog good Burly good good yes going to come back the other way so you guys can see another angle here so again not queuing the heel I don't really care what side he's on right now just very good burle good good good burle yes as we're developing this he's naturally looking at me because his engagement is there first so I'm create there's a couple things is I'm training the dog I want in the future he just so happens to also be a puppy so that's how you guys have to treat this when you're training your dog or if you're just training an older dog this is still the same stuff but it's important to understand the end goal I want this dog to be engaged with me I want this dog's relationship with me to be really really great really keen on me and really just ignoring everything else finding value in our relationship finding motivation in our relationship so you're starting to see these things start to come together even without teaching him the heal so once I start teaching him leash pressure and the heel things are going to come together so so nicely so that's what this is starting to look like as we blend and all puppy training in this guy series is going to be blending a series of blending just like with kids kids education we're going to go 1+ 1 = 2 2 + 2 = 4 and we're just going to going to keep blending to really create the best dog we possibly can right [Applause] [Music] burle ...
