hey everyone welcome back to another exciting episode i'm here today with tom rose from the tom rose school and he's going to give us a little tour of his school and how the program's set up in order to give new students a successful career so thank you so much for having me today tom i'm really excited to be here and i'm excited to show my audience where my education in the dog training world started thank you very happy to have you here uh behind this you see our main training building which is the largest training building where we do most of our work uh to the right here is a smaller original training building i spent a lot of time in both of them yeah it's nice to have the option to get away from activity and get along on your own in a different location definitely and then if you want to we can walk up the stairs here so i noticed we have students right now working with ikt is correct yes most are iqtvs a couple of them are their own dogs can you tell them a little bit about the ikt and what that is in the program is one of the most important things yeah it is i feel the ikt is very important mainly because for most all these students when they graduate they're going to make most of their money from doing ikt dogs and ikt stands for in kennel training and so that that's going to be their bread and butter from there they can branch out and do other things make other contacts police departments customs whomever but the ikt is what's going to put the vast amount of money in your account to begin with absolutely it was huge for me when i was coming through the school i wish i had more ikts because that's what gives you the experience to not only work with a huge variety of different dogs but also working with clients it gave me an opportunity to get some of those jitters out that you have in the very first time first time you do a lesson you're like everything goes blank yeah like oh i don't know what to say you know by the time i had my 10th in kennel training dog i was feeling really good i was feeling confident and by the time i went out and i had my own clients it already seemed like i've been doing this for a long time even when i was still very new within the industry so i agree i think it's one of the most important things it's great to see them working with it right now can we show them a little bit of the requirements and what the students in the professional course have to do yeah just as far as obedience you're concerned the requirements in order to graduate so that's something i always talk about to my audience one of the things that really attracted me to the tom rose school was that all the requirements are based on things that you can experience in the real world like akc igp tracking search and rescue scent detection so i'd like to show that a little bit to the audience yeah we're we're trying to graduate a student that's very well-rounded depending on what they want to go to in so we include agility we include ipo obedience akc obedience we include tracking as you just mentioned scent detection work just as much well-rounded as many different subjects as we possibly can can we take them over to the whiteboard yeah so let's go this way guys so this over here is a whiteboard that shows the requirements now this is for the professionals right yes it is okay so you can see up here what we got the doghouse so novice that's akc and then we have novice sits and down so what does this mean when you have the novices and downs and the novice okay novice would just be healing with your dog off lead on lead whatever is included in the novice exercises the sits and down is just a sit stay in a down state for a prescribed amount of time and here at the school at least when i was here we had it separated normally when you're competing and you're doing an akc novice obedience routine it's all at the same time right they do their opinions you do the obedience and then you go out of the ring and you wait and then the judge calls you back and a group of people comes back and all those sits and bounce at one time and if you fail the sits and down at actual akc you fail everything yeah but one of the things you do here is you separate it especially because a lot of the students are working with puppies that don't maybe have the attention span that an adult dog would have correct yes and so we have ipo one ipo one tracking now i know tracking's a big one because a lot of my audience have been posting comments asking about some tracking and i know one of the really big things that put the name tom rose on the map was you were the first american ever to get a perfect on an fh track yeah originally when i learned how to tracking nobody knew anything about it there was no one to go to there's no one to answer my questions it was just pretty much unheard of there was police departments that were doing it but it was very incorrectly done so i had to learn most of it and traveling to europe and talking different people i had to put it together myself but we include it in the program and it leads of course into search and rescue felon tracking a lot of different things but the main thing that i like about tracking is it's done motivationally so it teaches the student how to train the dog using motivational methods because that's about the only way they can do it at this level and that's what i really love about this curriculum is you know even when i came to the school my main focus and what i really wanted to do was obedience i really loved the concept of obedience and getting a dog to want to sit and down and go into heel position all these cool things and then learning you know scent detection learning tracking learning search and rescue it just gave me a much better understanding of dog training right and even though it may not have been specifically what i was interested in at first it made me look at dog training in a different way which widened my perspective and increased my skills i believe as a dog trainer right so i think it's absolutely important for that to be on the curriculum i love it so we kind of compare it to college and your undergraduate work they're exposing into accounting to mathematics to english several different things and then you decide what you really want to do and you enroll in law school or med school or whatever you want to do so that's what this is intended to do this kind of undergraduate level yep and i always tell people this is like the harvard of dog training it's one of the best so then we have specific odor so that's going to be the scent detection correct right and that would be of the student's choice they may want to do bomb work they might want to do narcotics they may want to do some other scent like birch or something some other particular thing that they're interested in doing we let them decide what they want to do for the search and the requirements for the scent detection that's based on police scent detection work or where did you get the requirements for that what were you basing that it came from originally from an organization in this country that certified narcotics dogs and we liked their testing and the way they scored and we kind of stayed with that that's awesome and so we have agility now here's something too with the agility a lot of the students end up having puppies and so i remember going to the course we would adjust the agility to work with a puppy so the jumps were really then we'd do that so they're not jumping very high everything was worked around to uh be able to handle puppies which i really liked and then the agility being able to take that and continue working with it for me it was a lot of fun i ended up loving agility yeah and the dogs love it too i mean they have so much fun doing the agility and then right there we have the cgc so uh cgc is that still 100 motivational yes yeah so what was your intentions with that we wanted to give students an opportunity to begin with young dogs that are not yet being subject to compulsive motivation so it's positively motivated he wanted to see that they had the patience to motivation and train dogs to attain the cgc so it's a lot easier than akc novice yeah and i think it's very important like that was a challenge for me coming through the course but what i really loved about the school was it wasn't one size fits all when i came through the instructors here were excellent it was so great to work directly underneath you as well but being able to learn all the different tools in the industry to be educated on everything so then now when i have a client that comes to me and says hey do you know how to do this or do you know how to do that or whatever yes i do i had an opportunity to do all of it here and that's the real beauty is you give everybody the tools to build their mansion and you let them choose what they want to use right which i think is important as a professional in this industry you have to know it all yeah and that's what i love about the school we refer to it as this toolbox exactly from what she said yeah all right and then right over here we have tdi so that's new that wasn't here when i was here what is that one yeah it's therapy dog international and it's a little bit more difficult than the cgc okay and so you guys added that how recent have you added that when did you start that uh possibly two years ago i believe years ago excellent i love it and so what is the stick jump now that was here when i came but you know for the audience with the stick job those are just basically tricks that we want motivationally trained disciplines that dogs are trained to do and that's just you hold the stick and the dog jumps over it and that's it so it might be a puppy jumping over a stick that's four inches off the ground or it might be a male annoyed thick that's two feet off the ground yeah and speaking of puppies when a student goes through the program they're required to take two dogs through correct correct do they have to be puppies or can they be any age no we tell them any age any breed whatever they want to do we don't discriminate regardless but we've found in the past it's much easier to do puppies plus one of the major aspects of the books that i've written is we call puppy imprinting and it's really helpful for the student to learn at least with one dog how to do this imprinting and it's amazing what we're able to do we're able to take a goal and retriever puppy as an example and do imprinting work and have him behave much like a malinois when he turns a year or two year and a half of age so it's a very important part of the program however it's not a requirement of the program so the student it's up to the student whether or not they want to start with a puppy it just has to be an untrained dog yes but yeah and when i came through i use puppies because i want to learn that imprinting process which i'm grateful that i have and it's funny i've had some comments on my channel where people say hey can i have or is it really that bad if i missed the imprinting stage and well you could train a dog even if you missed the imprinting stage but it's so important if you have a young puppy to start them right away at eight weeks when you bring them home right i mean that's my favorite thing i get a brand new puppy it's like let's start training i'm gonna show this puppy how awesome it is to train and then by the time you have that year old dog they absolutely love to train which makes it way easier to teach them new behaviors and building their confidence and all that stuff so i love it we say that they've learned how to learn and they're happy about it they're not upset if you criticize them they come back and wag their tail and they're happy yup and that's the best way i believe to really train a dog is to start from the beginning yeah and you know it's funny too i've heard some people say oh you shouldn't train until they're six months of age and when i hear that i'm like no no you want to start the sooner the better yeah i began doing this about 50 years ago and i was highly criticized they told me you don't even think about training until the dog was a year of age at that point then i went out and began beating everybody at dog shows and winning everything and all of a sudden i'm doing seminars all over the country on how to do the puppy in printing and that was the basis of my first book written back in the early 1980s is it still available no we still have a few of them but it's almost sold out the one i read that i love is dog training with the touch yeah that's my most recent book why did you call it dog training with the touch it turned out that i was in europe with one of my clients who was competing in the doberman national in holland and we had been working the dog well while went inside their clubhouse and everybody was talking and i couldn't understand much of what they're saying they want me to go out and work my dog and i did and they seemed fascinated i don't know why it's this usual training for me and they're all talking amongst each other and they come back in and they say we want to ask you something we've got a translator that i'm gonna talk to and see if she can explain our question and they're asking me why didn't you correct here and why didn't you correct there seemed like you're off easy on the dog but yet the dog is really doing well and i said yeah that's kind of the basis of what i'm trying to accomplish and they say the only way we can figure to translate the word from our language to yours would be your training with the touch in other words you don't have to put a heavy duty collar on them and make a hard correction you seem to be able to get your point across without doing that i love that that's awesome and i've seen other trainers that have that too and i always think about that it's like what are they doing that's it's so effective yeah you know and that's awesome i love that and so the last two we have trick one and trick two which i actually i love these requirements i had so much fun when i was an assistant instructor here seeing all the cool tricks that the students would come up with i had a student when i was here that he taught his dog to make baskets with the basketball and all kinds of cool things i mean some simple ones like spin but then other ones another student taught their dog to point out colors or not colors it was like written on paper so she would hold up paper and she'd say blue and the dog touched the blue yeah or red and the dog touched the red it was just written out so they were seeing whatever you know in order to identify it but it was cool yeah and so i love that and so basically they just have to come out and they have to do it we let them tell us what trick they want to do as you just mentioned and then we say okay teach the dog to do that and we'll watch whether maybe a skateboard it might all kinds of crazy things getting on a barrel and rolling a barrel like a sale would do whatever but just whatever they want to do and it's again it's motivational and and what i love about that too is it gives the students and this is something i tell everybody all my audience everyone is when it comes to training a dog what's really important is learning and understanding the science and that's something that i learned a lot here is what is the science to dog training what gets our dogs to do certain behaviors how does the motivation work and what varies between each dog which i often tell people that i learned from you is their perseverance is going to be different and you have to adjust according to that their intelligence is going to be different their motivation is going to be different right all these things and what's cool about the tricks is they have to problem solve they have to go okay how can i implement the science that i learned in order to get my dog to do this behavior so for example when i was a student i was trying to teach my dog to smile and so what i would do is i would say smile and i would lift my dog's lips up and i did it over and over and over again no matter how many times i did it i said smile my dog didn't smile i'm like why isn't my dog smiling and what was i taught my dog to allow me to lift up the lips so if i took my dog in to the veterinarian i go smile and then he'd be like okay go ahead and lift up my lip i didn't teach the behavior right but then i blew my dog's face and he bit at the air i was like i could use that yeah so then i said smile and i blew my dog's face and he did the thing and before you knew it now i had a dog doing the behavior because i was able to problem solve and implement the science yeah so even though that seems like something it's not a big deal it's just a trick i think it's so important as far as evolving as a dog trainer yeah it really is really cool and this is just the professional program guys he also has a master course which we're not going to jump into that right now but that involves advanced obedience it involves advanced search and rescue scent detection a few other things it's taking all of this going to the next level which i did and i'm so grateful that i did that course now over here we have the training building which you guys saw a little bit when we walked in this is where you guys do the testing for the requirements which is something else i want to point out and this really attracted me to your school was the fact that just because you come to the school and you can memorize some information it doesn't mean you're going to graduate right you have to pass the requirements you have to prove that you can train a dog right and that's what i wanted as a trainer i wanted to be able to train a dog i wanted to step out of school and be ready to hit the ground running and that's what i got here it's very hands-on we've been asked especially during the colbit can't we do a video course and we could teach a lot of the words we could teach behaviors and so forth but when it comes to training it's a hands-on thing you have to learn how to do what you need to do with the dog i couldn't agree more and if you're going to the top level where you want to be somebody who's teaching others it's important to have somebody like i used to get really nervous when you were watching me train because i'm like oh my gosh tom rose is watching me i don't want to mess up but it helped me a lot because you were able to identify mistakes i was making right that i wasn't able to see and it increased my skills as a trainer yeah and same thing with the instructors when they're helping out the instructors every instructor i've seen at this school has been i mean top tier absolutely so they do the testing here for all the indoor stuff such as the doghouse novice all the obedience right things like ipo and tracking and search and rescue how do you do the testing for that it's done out at our ranch we got a 260 acre ranch we've got several training fields set up so it's really nice i only acquired that a little over 20 years ago but before that we were depending on county parks and so forth which never really worked out well and the students have full access yes they feel which come any time of day or night which i loved as a student i was always down there working in the full-size competition shits and field that you have constantly tracking the dogs being out there who doesn't love being out with their dogs yeah right yeah and so we have the ring gate set up right now if you want to turn the camera and check this out so over there that's where in the beginning of the program you guys do a lot of the instructional as far as information this is akc rules this is basic behavioral problems you might run into this is dog psychology a lot of that takes place in the first few weeks yes we start out with a lot of lecture there's very well there's working but i would say it's 80 lecture and 20 working towards the end of the course it's maybe 2 lecture and ninety-eight percent working so hands-on in here training with the instructors constantly helping them out overseeing what they're doing making sure they're not making those mistakes and developing them as dog trainers so when they test you guys can see there's a bunch of climb beds out here and that's something i tell everybody too the climb command that i taught here and i always know when i see another tom rose graduate because they called the climb command as well yeah like oh you're a timer graduate so climb command excellent command teacher dogs and then so this was set out recently because they just finished testing this morning correct so some of the students were testing some of the requirements now when they test the requirements they come out here and they have to test the exact same way they would if they were competing in the actual competition right like igp or you name it yeah so it's graded the same way you guys have your grading sheets and so it gives them that experience of being able to compete which is a great way for a new dog trainer any dog trainer really to show that they can do what they say they can do all right next if you don't mind maybe we can take a trip to the ranch and show them the ranch where they can do sure i always enjoy that all right awesome it's a beautiful day let's let's get on over there okay one of the requirements in order to become a certified professional dog trainer is igp obedience tom can you tell us what's behind us yeah we're looking at a regulation size training field for many disciplines we've had agility trials out here psa trials uh shuts in igp whatever and it's it's flat it's nice we keep it up and we have jumps already set up and we got an overhead wire for working on recalls and send outs so it's a beautiful place to both train and show your dog excellent that's something that's really important when the students are coming through the program because we want them to be i should say you want them to be as prepared as possible when they graduate that they really know the dog training industry not just pet training but also competition obedience right yeah and i always tell people if you could train a dog to competition level obedience pet training is easy it is you know so this is a really great field i love this field when i was here going to the school i trained here all the time and it's something that's available to the students that come to the tom rose school so let's head over to some of the other fields i'd love our viewers to see the fields where the students are able to track great okay not only are the students able to train in a championship size igp field the students also have full access to tom's 260 acre ranch that has multiple fields to train in whether the students want to generalize their dogs to the obedience by training in multiple locations work competition style tracking teach search and rescue to their dogs or even just play and exercise this ranch has it all the tom rose school truly is the world's elite dog training academy had it not been for the excellent instructions and professionalism by tom rose at the school i wouldn't be in the position that i am today the school gave me the tools necessary to thrive in the profession that i love by teaching me everything from the ground up and helped me to develop into the trainer i am today by showing me what i needed to know and understand in order to perfect this art by breaking down the science i was taught every different style and modern technique available and i've been able to choose which is best suited for me and the dogs i'm working with they covered everything from basic obedience all the way to advanced competition training service dog training and everything in between if you truly want to become a professional dog trainer and you want to learn the skills to master this craft then the tom rose school is your best choice [Music] you ...
