[Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Applause] [Music] hey folks welcome back to another episode of adventures in dog training with american standard dog training and american overwatch canine services so this is a second part video where we have bentley here to my right he's an am staff about a year and a half old if you guys remember him very popular dog on our channel we had him when he was about about three months old give or take when we when we dropped him off he was here for a three week on leash program after about a year the owners reached out to us and said hey we should have took your advice and gone for the full off-leash program which takes about four weeks and so he's been back with us now about two and a half weeks and the reason we had to spend two and a half weeks almost three weeks actually um give or take getting him off leash is because when he came back to us after being away for about a year we noticed he had developed a couple of bad issues and one of those issues really the the number one issue he had was a huge aversion to the prong caller now when we had him as a puppy we taught him about the prong collar and he was super light on the leash and very well behaved i mean he's great you can look back at the other videos and see what a sharp dog he was however literally day one when we got him back we hooked up the prong collar to him and realized that as soon as you gave any pressure on the prong or any kind of direction or correction and he would absolutely shut down he would shimmy about three or four feet away from you and look up at you like terrified and the dogs don't do that naturally the reason that happened is some kind of prior experience and so i don't know if it was one experience two experiences something had happened in the 12 months that we didn't have him in which he picked up this we'll call it uh just a bad reaction to the prong we don't we don't want a dog to shoot away from us and cower in fear when we apply pressure on the prong and so i reached out to the owner to find out what had happened exactly and he explained to me this that it's kind of a two-in-one here the reason he came back for the board and train is because anytime you would unhook him from the prong collar or take him off leash and he heard this sound of this being undone it was like go time and he would run off and not come back and this is really just happening in the backyard but he's running around like a wild man and refusing to come back to the owner and what happened is and this has probably happened to you guys at home or it's happened it happens all the time probably every day in america we have a dog that refuses to come back to us and what happened in his case which is probably happening a lot in other cases when the dog finally comes back to you you're so frustrated that he wasn't listening that you hook him up to his leash and then start to deliver correction correction correction correction for all that pent up frustration you had because he wouldn't come back to you but he wouldn't come back to you like one minute ago three minutes ago five minutes ago and dogs live their lives in like three to five second intervals at best there's a dog off camera so he's a little excited but um my point being don't do this at home with your dog if your dog is not listening to you and is running around off leash and finally comes back to you as much as you're frustrated with the dog as much as you want to vent your frustration and let them know that i'm unhappy with the fact that you ran off leash and didn't listen to me by the time he comes back to you that other moment has passed so you cannot correct him for it and what happened is he finally came back owner hooks them up to the prong collar and and hammers them on the honk on the prong collar now i'm all about issuing discipline and heavy discipline as needed with a dog especially if you're working with a really high drive dog like a police dog those dogs can take a licking and keep on ticking and sometimes they make huge mistakes and need a huge correction for that mistake but in this case what bentley had learned was if and when i come back there's a chance that someone's gonna hook me up to a leash and all but clobber me with the prong collar and so he just got a very very averse to coming back when called that's number one so we had a little someone walking by and we didn't want to get them on camera so he had learned that by coming back there's a pretty high probability that if he came running back by the time he got back to the owner the owner might uh give him a heavy correction so that was the first thing we had to iron out the other thing we had to iron out right away was we found that and i'll kind of demonstrate it here that if you popped him on the prong collar good boy he would freak out i think i already talked about that a little bit and so we had to do something called counter condition we want a dog to take a correction understand exactly what it was for and what he needs to do to come back into the correct behavior therefore why we call it a correction and so for him we had the counter condition that when you feel this pop yes it doesn't mean run away from me it doesn't mean i'm mad at you it actually means look at me and i'll give you a treat so i'll show you what that looks like now yes before had i popped him on this he'd be jumping off of this trying to get away from me so i'll try to show you that we can even put a little more pressure on him good boy i'll purposely get him to look away from me which he is now actually good yes you guys maybe can't see what my hand's doing but it's just popping just popping what we call them on on a prong collar are one through ten these are just a series of ones i'll try another one right now watch he's highly distracted so we'll go up to a two watch watch yes point being we had to iron all of that out so we're gonna end the video here and just explain to you that if your dog is running around off leash i mean you should have better training to begin with but if and when they finally come back to you that is not the time to clobber them with a leash a prong collar your hand or a sandal because you're going to make the dog afraid of you and that's not what you want to do so there are better methods we can cover that in another video what you do if your dog is off leash and not coming back to you but the point the other point being this too if you take your dog to a good trainer or you watch enough youtube videos learn how to train on your own the prong collar is not a death sentence for your dog the prong collar means only good things we're going to go for a walk i'm going to get a treat we're going to do training this is going to be awesome we're going to go somewhere fun but don't let the prong collar be like just a hammer okay it can be a lot of other things all right it's a training tool so yes
