today's lesson is a request I got from a member who asked how do I get goofy to sit so close to me on the front so if I see a goofy here here how do I get him to close this distance here and stay this close because a lot of times you'll see dogs and they'll be sitting at this great distance and people can't get them to close that distance now Maya has a little bit more of a problem with a distance where she stays a little further away so I'm gonna show you this technique both with goofy and with Maya so first of all let's start out with getting goofy to understand where I want him to sit and that's going to be getting him close and I'm going to use rewards for this I'm not going to use compulsion I'm not gonna force him into me because forcing the dog to come closer oftentimes will create just the opposite effect so see if I'm saying them hey come closer closer he's not responding to this because what he's trying to do he's trying to stand his ground and it's creating what I call an opposition reflex and the opposition reflex the dog kind of goes opposite to where I wanted to be and you'll see that in some of my videos when I tell the dog to sit if I teach him sit then I'll create this pressure in the dog to make him really sit into this and you'll see that a lot in healing and other techniques where the dog will really be aversive to being told where to be and to be that close and again you can put more and more pressure on the dog and get this to work but that's not really what you want to do with your dog you want to do this through a motivational training and in a way that the dog can learn that this is going to be fun so the way to do that is first of all remember all your recalls are based on fun so I'm going to say goofy come on here here here here and stop now why does he sit this close because when I do the tick the training when I build this initial foundation work with my puppy I don't have the dog and I don't say goofy come sit because see what just happened he already sat and he sat prematurely he sat way behind where I wanted to sit and that always happens and that's in the video the lesson I made called the biggest mistake dog trainers make that's one of them that though people will call the dog come sit and see right there it's shutting down the drive to want to come further or to finish closer because you're yelling at him sit and he knows every time he comes to you he has to sit so by default what your dog really learns is when I here come the next thing I want to hear is sit and that creates a negative picture in the dog's mind that when I get to you I'm gonna have to do something else and therefore dogs will oftentimes come back and stay at a little distance away from the RSC goofy is gonna try to keep getting closer and closer and closer because he knows that's where the fun happens but once a dog starts to learn I come I'm told to sit or I have a toy and I come and I'm told to give it then the dog starts to default the behavior of opening that distance more and trying to get further away from you because that's what keeps him from having to be close and get into that sit mentality to give me the toy mentality so the very very very first thing I do with dogs when I teach him the recall is I'm going to use a treat and I'm going to watch I'm going to show you before I do it so I'm gonna impact back a couple weight good boy good good weight right so when I call him now I'm gonna say goofy come and I'm gonna throw the treat between my legs and that in and of itself creates a super excited personality know people who would ask me what kind of treats do you use and it depends so for example here we're working on grass and on grass it's really hard to see Brown treats because of the contrast so I'm gonna default to something that he can really see like a piece of string cheese so you're gonna see here in this lesson when I throw the cheese it's very obvious where it is it's very easy for him to find and it's something he can easily get to and grasp so just way yeah hold good boy come yep good now he really thought it was there I didn't throw it yeah goofy here yeah here and I would repeat this lesson a thousand times yeah yeah so when I say to him here he knows here his picture each and every time is that he has to go beyond where I'm standing so for example if I put him here yeah that's it and I say in theory like a normal trainer which held it okay here he knows that that's right no that's a perfect front it's not going to get any better than that and even when he does that I'm gonna say yes and throw the treat through the more often he gets the idea that the front or the come command we call it a front because goofy here because he ends up in front of me and from here I'm going to put him at a heel position or right heel position or through the leg position or whatever that might be in some of the ring sports from here here I would go through and he would come to that position here in an obedience position I'd say fus and he would get next to me so those are the the finishing position or the heel positions where the front is just the getting to the front of the person position that's important to remember because if he starts to prematurely spin up front in other words if he sits if he's there now it's hard for me to get him to heel so love from here if I said Foose it doesn't make as much sense to him as if I'm here and I say Foose and he understands that from the front he gets into the finish people will often ask why don't you just use a toy to train this because it'd be a lot more fun a lot easier my dog doesn't have food right if your dog doesn't have food drive you need to create food drive in the dog and you need to motivate them to want to work for food either by withholding some food or by finding a treat that they really really love in part two of this video I'm going to show you and tell you why I prefer to start with treats and why it's more beneficial for your dog to learn the training by beginning with treats also in part two of this video I will show you how to properly use a toy to do this technique and to build more drive into your dog and for part two you'll have to join my member section [Music] [Applause] ...
