hey guys nature Elmer here in today's video we're gonna be working on introducing scent detection for our dogs [Music] [Music] the very first thing that I like to do is teach the dog the behavior that I would like them to perform so what I'm gonna do this is an exercise known as fixed shaping so we have something in mind we would like our dog to perform and then when they do it we're going to use our terminal marker and then we're going to reward them I'm gonna be demonstrating with re here first I'm going to be using a climb platform I simply want my dog to jump up on the platform once she jumps up on the platform I'm gonna use my terminal marker encouraging her to jump off so she can get her reward and we're gonna repeat the process once she has that down and she fully understands that concept then I'm gonna introduce the different containers that my dog is going to be placing her nose into once we start adding the odor for our scent detection work so right now during this exercise we're not going to be using any actual odor that will come in in my next video so let me show you how I'm gonna do this so first she's on the platform I'm gonna go free let her jump down and get the reward then I'm gonna wait till she jumps back on free I'm not asking her to do it I'm waiting till she does it on her own free good so you can use free whatever your terminal marker is to get your dog to do this behavior free very good you can see she's picking it up free very quickly and I'm saying at the moment she jumps on the platform free now with someone you might have to do you might have to walk to the platform to encourage your dog free or to kind of give them a little bit of a hint kind of an idea of what it is you want them to do free good and I've done a lot of free proactive training with Ari so she knows that she's gonna start seeking out behaviors that's going to get her rewards that's why she's coming into a sit front right now but I'm gonna kind of help her out free to let her know that it's jumping on the platform free is what I want if you're using a clicker this is when you would click your dog would jump up click and then you allow them to come down to get the reward your dog would jump up click and then reward our markers pinpoint a moment in time when our dog is right or wrong that's why it's called a marker because it is marking a moment in time so my F REE is my terminal marker this is letting her know she did it correctly she's going to get a reward and she is released from that position free very good so now we have her doing that now we're gonna jump to the next step this is where we're going to add the container that will we be placing our odors in in the future exercises now this exercise normally with most dogs that I'm training scent detection I'll do just this exercise for a couple free for a couple days really getting them to understand free the concept of jumping up on that platform in order to get free that reward okay so I'm gonna get the new the item that we want so again this would be a new session the idea is you come back out you're getting ready to do this session again but now the picture is a little bit different it's not just your climb platform but there is also a container so I'm gonna use three different containers these are the same containers that I use every time I teach a dog scent detection I'm gonna be using a cinder block wrapped in duct tape and that keeps the edges from being sharp you never want your dog to have a bad experience when you're teaching them a new behavior or a new exercise then I'm gonna be using an empty bucket and then I'm gonna be using an empty box with a hole cut in the top so you're gonna see how we will be doing this so again new day I come out and it's gonna be a little bit of a different picture so let me show you so now this would be as if we're doing another session it's a new day and the only thing that's different is now the cinder block is on the platform I'm gonna wait till she jumps on but this time I'm not gonna reward her for jumping on the platform I'm gonna wait until she decides to investigate the new object I have not done scent detection with her so hopefully this doesn't take her too long but we'll see so I'm gonna release her from her downst a break and then I'm gonna wait she sticks her nose inside of the cinder block free good so you see how she stuck her nose in it to naturally investigate it I might have dropped the piece and I'm just gonna wait I like my dogs to be a little bit more proactive when it comes to doing this exercise free good good girl again there's no odor I'm just waiting for the behavior free good girl you have to make sure you say the marker and that's that free could at the exact moment your dog does the right behavior free so you see she's trying to do other behaviors to get the reward but free the only one that's gonna work right now is putting her nose inside of the cinderblock wait good girl very good she likes to lay down as well free good girl good job try not to drop food like me come on free very good free excellent job re free good girl free very good free nice so I would break free so now I would allow her to do this with the center block for another day maybe two but it depends on the dog each dog is going to learn at a different pace so base it on how quickly your dog is figuring out the exercise and what it is that you expect from them so now that she's doing it nicely with the cinder block now I'm gonna add a new item so this time it's going to be a bucket so this might be day three now a day three there's a new container same position where I had the cinder block but it's a different container and the same idea we're gonna wait to try to see if our dog is naturally going to do the behavior we're trying to get them to perform which is going to be to investigate the bucket later this is going going to transition into we're gonna have owners in it and you'll see how we're gonna do that in the future videos so again this would be another day or another training session I bring her out and I walk over to the platform brick brick all I set it early free good girl so you see she's figuring out that free it's again looking into the container free good job re free very good free excellent free so that time I wanted her to stay in a little bit longer so I can ask for duration free good girl free I wouldn't ask for too much duration in the beginning free because success I've said this in many of my videos builds on success the more success free they have the more willing the more they're going to be willing to try harder if they don't get the free if they don't get the reward right away so I'm gonna make her work a little harder again free good girl free very nice you see how she's placing her head in a little deeper Rick good girl so now I'm gonna get the final container and like I said it's just a box has a lid on and there's a hole cut in the very top enough for my dog to stick her muzzle in so let me go ahead and grab that and I'll show you the last portion so now this would be the next day or maybe just later on in the day and a new session this does go pretty fast for some dogs so like I said with REI I've done a lot of proactive dog training I talked about this in one of my episodes I recommend checking it out and so now I'm gonna do the same thing I'm gonna walk over I'm gonna wait till she does the correct behavior and then I'm gonna simply mark and reward I want her to place her nose inside of the box break free and she's figured out the game already pretty quickly free good girl free very nice free excellent job re free good girl free free good job re free free yeah baby alright so that would be a good session this is going to be the start make sure your dog knows the markers you want to have the terminal marker that's what I use the entire time because I'm allowing her to she's done you could technically use yes because we're not using a verbal command remember when we use a verbal command that's when we reinforce the stay so when you use a continuation marker down if I told her down and I said yes then she's in a down stay if I used fre e free then she would be released re I said free then she'd be released and she'd be able to get the reward so we want to have those and then also make sure you do some of that proactive dog training the video where I talk about do we always have to reward our dog with treats is where I talk about an exercise known as free shaping free shaping is incredibly important and it's going to help you quite a bit when you start doing fixed shaping so that's what we're using right now to get our dog to do this behavior so in the next video you're gonna see we're gonna start adding odors we're gonna start doing a lot of cool stuff so this is an easy great way to start this exercise I hope you guys enjoyed today's video some people were asking about
