morning guys it's Matt wkd trained dogs we get loads of questions at the moment about walking on lead I'm gonna see if I can help you all out we're gonna take Syd with us we're gonna grab a lead and we're gonna go hit it do some lead training so we're taking Syd with us we're gonna do a little bit of training with him to be fair he's never been a huge puller on lead but he does all these moments I'm only on the around running off a path and so why does your dog not on lead the first reason is dogs walk twice as fast as people do so we walk at about three mile an hour dogs walk at about seven mile an hour and so naturally from pretty much the age of six months your dog's going to be walking quicker than you are and if you don't do something to try and combat that and you're gonna end up with a dog that calms you down the stree the second reason is that dogs learn that if they do something that gets them what they want quicker then they're gonna do it more often so if your dog learns that it can drag you to the park and you're gonna get there quicker and then play ball with it it's gonna want to get there as fast as possible that's just positive reinforcement in action if something good happens as a result of the behavior the dogs gonna do it more often so when you're looking around I'm sure a lot of you have been online and look at different dog training advice and they do this stop and start method so you stop wait for your dog to look back at you and then you walk forwards again yes it's really not being a good example here we start and the dog stops next year and everything's great unfortunately for quite a few dogs that's not gonna work so here we go who's got a little bit of forward action now there we're gonna walk stop looks at me go forward again it's called the stop and start method it's going to work for some dogs not gonna work for the majority of them and certainly if you've tried all the other stuff that you've seen and tried loads of advice online none of it's working it's because you're trying the wrong things guys so what can we do instead to try and make things up and well I haven't bought and it treats with me but if I had some in my pocket we could try and opposite some treats to pay attention to me problem is Syd's not a very food orientated dog so he's not really going to be bothered he's gonna be much more interested about what's going on in his environment so what's next well there's another method where you turn around you walk the other way that can be quite good see I used to see I've just changed directions it starts paying attention to me turn anyway he's still there still paying attention now for a lot of dogs that might work but if you've got one it's not working for then what you need to do is have a little correction to make it slightly more unpleasant for the dog not to keep on going the way it's going and you want to make the dog slightly more concerned about the consequences I'm not paying attention to you then it is doing whatever it wants now when we say slightly concerned I don't mean it's got to be horrible I mean it's got to be nasty hasn't got to be painful it's just got to be something that the dog's gonna feel now see how that got SIDS attention straight away now look at him and now he's really paying attention the the key to this is doing it at a level that's enough to make the dog pay attention to you without upsetting the dog if you want it to keep its tail up nice and high you don't want to be making it really stressed out turn the other way little correction dog comes with you pays attention now good lad come on then talk to him tell him it's good good boy SID what a good man now look at the amount of tension we're getting there hey good boy stop stops right by my side look at that sit good boy now there's loads of ways that you can apply this correction but if you do it right you don't have to do it very often look at it now two corrections dogs paying attention to me got rid of all the distractions everything's gram let's just get Molly back a little bit her old age so just look it's it again so with with a decent correction it's appropriate what you end up with a dog that goes wherever you go doesn't mess around isn't dragging you down the road isn't disrupted by the cat all the other dog it's just back just paying attention that's all you want from your dog now a couple of things that people do wrong with their Corrections they tend to drag the dog like this and put constant pressure on the lead and the dog doesn't like it cieariy is almost pulling about pulling back from it it's a natural opposition reflex that all dogs have if you push to push down on the shoulder their body naturally pushes back up at you the same happens when they're walking away from you they're naturally pull against the tension of the lead and if they're behind you and you're trying to drag them forward they'll also naturally resist against that as well so your correction wants to be on and off in a split second soon as you feel the connection with the dog you want to release it again I'm just going to try and show you but he's already paying quite a lot of attention so just like that little snapping correction gets the dog paying attention now what he should do now is follow me wherever I go and actually this isn't so much about lead walking it's just about attention if you can gain attention so your dog goes wherever you want it to and you win in the game right guys hope that's useful any questions stick them in the comments below give us a like give us a share and see you next week [Music] ...
