if you have an extremely reactive dog like Domino you just saw him react like crazy I'm going to be showing you exactly how we fix leash reactivity so we can give our dog a free fun offleash life so if you want to see how to do it watch this video all the way through to the end we'll see you there so the first thing we need to do when we're fixing our dog's reactivity is discover why is our dog reactive and what are their intentions when Domino came for his board and train we had to figure out is he reacting and barking at a dog to bite them or is he reacting at a dog to get to play or is he just anxious and he doesn't know how to handle it and poorly socialized there's a lot of reasons your dog could be reactive and after spending maybe about a day with him we discovered he doesn't have any negative intentions he's not going to bite a dog he doesn't have a bite history some dogs are reactive because they are just aggressive and they do want to bite but but that's not Domino the reason that he's reactive is cuz he was poorly socialized and he likes getting a reaction out of the other dogs and so now that we've discovered why he's reactive we can hop in to start fixing the problem so now that we've discovered why our dog is reactive we can start getting to the bottom of actually fixing the reactivity and there's one thing that you guys need to know when you're working on reactivity training with your dog and that is there's three parts to it there is a stimuli in Domino's case the stimuli is a dog walking by and often in reactivity that is what the stimuli is a dog walking by near him that is what's going on in the environment second part is how Domino responds what what is his reaction does he bark does he lunge does he does he do whatever right if he reacts that's a behavioral response if he does nothing that's also behavioral response and the third part is what we do to either reinforce or punish the behavior we want to make a difference by letting our dog make his own decisions and we either reinforce behaviors that we want to be repeated or discourage other known as punish behaviors that we don't want to be repeat it and this works 100% of the time if you do it properly takes proper Corrections takes a lot of training weeks and weeks of training but if done properly it works 100% of the time no matter how bad the dog's reactivity is which is a lot a lot of trainers can't say that they can fix 100% of dogs reactivity and I promise you if you do it right you can all right so let's hop into actual training the first thing that we do with our reactive dog is we don't go and work on all this obedience we don't teach him anything we might teach him a loose leash walk and a heel but that's it we let Domino we hook him up to a prong CER and we let him go out and make his own decisions we bring him into areas that there are the stimuli that causes him to react and we want to add our punishment or our reinforcer to it so we got treats we got Gibble whatever your dog might like high value High reward and I don't put Domino into a heel all we do is we walk around we have a little bit of distance between us and the stimuli which are the dogs and we let Domino make his own decision if he gets worked up we are going to correct him and the correction level has to be the right level that we get his attention for him to just look at us there are some examples that I can give you of a correction that is too low Domino here is a very powerful dog and needs some heavy Corrections and so all If all we're doing is popping and he's not looking at us I know good boy he's not looking at us he's going to just keep fighting through the correction and it's not going to do anything it's going to teach him actually to fight through it we want the correction level to be enough where he stops and pays attention to us that's all we want good boy when we have that proper correction level if we give a timely correction with the right correction level we can get our dog off and then after that we fill the void behind a correction with good positive behavior and reinforcement showing a dog exactly what we want our dog to do we're going to work on this for a week or two at least here when we're working with dogs a lot this is probably a week or two of just training this is most of what we're doing we find places where our dog is going to react we bring our dog to it to actually work with our dog on the behavior and by the end of this part our dog should be 90% better they're not going to be 100% better but our dog should be 90 to 95% better not reactive you know potentially still looking at dogs when they walk by and it really just kind of causing an issue but no serious reacting or lunging or going crazy at least for the most part and once we have that we can move on all right so now that we've made so much progress with our dog we can start working on our dog's training we can start working on these sits the Downs the stays we have tons of videos on our YouTube channel you can go check them out it's very easy to do but we teach our dog basic obedience adding distractions slowly as our dog gets better with it once we have that we can introduce our dog to an e-collar again tons of videos on how to do that we have to do that the proper way and our dog has to be 100% sure this is us communicating if our e-collar training is not 100% there we cannot move on to this step once our dog knows they feel pressure and they come here this is us communicating they don't freak out and run away from us they know the automatic response is to come back to us we can start using the e-collar this is something that we don't do with every dog but some dogs that struggle with that last 5 or 10% we do this a lot with dogs to really just continue to reinforce and we can now because our dog is e-collar trained we can now give them more freedom in their life we can allow them to run around off leash and recall them in situations and places that are safe for that to happen and what we do is we let our dog free with stimuli around and it's going to take higher levels than what you're used to with General training but all we do let our dog make our own decision and instead of using the pron call as a correction we're using the e-collar as a correction I again a level just enough where we get a dog to turn around and look at us and come to us but not a level that's too high where our dog freaks out and also not a level that's too low that our dog fights through it it's the same exact pressure level but this is just a correction with no direction and the prong collar is a correction with Direction which is a very different feeling for your dog and so that's why we always start off and see if we can fix the reactivity with just the prong collar alone let's walk around and we'll find some dogs and I'll show you exactly what we do we are out here in a field we just had Domino running around a little bit and we have a dog coming by so I'm going to show you exactly what we do to yes good boy right we're going to encourage that yes let him make a good decision no little bit of pressure there yes yes good D no pressure yes good boy we'll walk around a little bit but all we're doing we're letting Domino make a decision and we are either reinforcing with positive behavior or discouraging Behavior using a little bit of pressure what we do is we keep continuing to practice this get closer as we did with the reactivity with a prong collar and we're just doing the same thing with a knee collar allowing our dog to make decisions on their own and before you know it you are going to be right next to dogs walking with your dog be totally fine and having two options one correction on a prong collar or a correction with no Direction with an E collar so now that we have fixed our dogs reactivity all we're going to do in the future is continue to generalize commands generalize obedience and generalize the lack of reactivity we're going to put our dog in different situations push them further and further every day and continue to improve on their training because training is never ever done but our dog can live a so much more happy life a so much more exciting engaging life and they don't have to be reactive and stressed out about what's going on so if you like videos
