now that we've gone over a lot of the instructional portion of this series becoming a professional dog trainer we'll start working on more of the hands-on part first it's essential to have a training plan this will help keep you focused and on track before you become a professional dog trainer it's good to have not only the knowledge but also a significant amount of practice you'll be able to accomplish this by having specific training goals for your personal dog or dogs as well as practicing on other dogs outside of your home you can get additional dogs to train by reaching out to local rescue groups or even some shelters will let you train their dogs lastly you can even make a post on something like next door or just ask your family and friends and offer free training in exchange for feedback or even a review it's important to let them know that you're on the journey of becoming a professional dog trainer so with that in mind i would suggest going for the easy dogs first the ones that don't have any fear or aggression issues as you get more experience and you become more confident you can start taking on some of the more challenging cases now for your personal dogs we're going to work on multiple goals or obedience routines many of these goals are the same requirements that tom rose has for his students at the tom rose school for professional dog trainers i'm calling them goals because i don't offer any kind of certification so for us they are not requirements but rather goals that we'll be working towards if you are interested in getting certified as a professional dog trainer you'd want to check out a school like the tom rose school the first is going to be a stick jump it sounds simple but it can be way more challenging than you may expect it really depends on the dog this will be a tool that we'll be using in the future to help teach our dogs the broad jump in the akc obedience routine whenever you have a chance go to your local hardware store and pick up a four foot or so pvc pipe we'll also be teaching our dogs two basic pet tricks this can be anything that would be considered a trick such as play dead spin weave bow over under roll over sit pretty stand on your hind legs wave or any other cute trick that you can come up with the purpose of this goal is to learn how to problem solve as well as implementing the science of dog training we also have a few obedience routines we're going to be working on in this series the cgc which is the canine good citizen the akc novice and open routine and the igp1 obedience routine for most of these requirements you'll need a focused heel so with that being said i would suggest starting on my 10 fundamental steps for a focused heel i would also recommend working on the finishes as well as solidifying the heel position i'll add links to each of these in the description of this video now let's go back to the dogs we'll be training outside of our homes this is what most dog training businesses would call doggy boot camp board and train stay and train or in kennel training i'm going to explain in this video the process that i follow when doing a strength staying trained this process would also be similar to day training day training is when the owner drops their dog off in the morning and picks them up in the evening first thing that i like to do is work on bonding and building a strong relationship based on trust for most dogs this process is pretty easy and straightforward we hang out with them we pet the dog we play fetch or tug if that's something the dog likes once i can tell the dog is comfortable in their new environment that's when i'll start the training the first thing i do with any dog that i train is engagement training this helps us teach the dog a few things one it teaches the dog that if they pay attention to us good things will happen it also helps us teach the dog our conditioned reinforcers or our markers when done correctly most dogs can become conditioned within the first day or so after that i can move on to the other important steps that help us establish our communication channels with the dog basically the first three steps are all about our communication now just note at the start of every session that i do with a dog i spend 30 seconds or so on engagement training the reason for this is that it gets the dog engaged and the more focus we have from our dogs while we're training the faster they'll learn once the dog is conditioned i'll start working on teaching the dog luring this is when we use food to lure the dog into the different commanded behaviors for all my bored and trained dogs aside from teaching them their markers i teach them sit down come heal or loose leash walking climb or go to bed off spin that one's for fun and stay in all the commanded positions all of these can be taught by using a lure this is one of the most powerful tools we can use to train dogs depending on the dog's food motivation and interest in training will depend on how long the step takes you want to make sure that it's pretty solid as it will help us teach the dog leash pressure which is our next step if you've been following my channel then you should know how powerful leash pressure training is when we use leash pressure we're using negative reinforcement we turn the pressure on and when the dog complies we turn it off i use leash pressure to help reinforce commands i use it to teach all the stay commands i use it to establish boundaries such as not going into the street or jumping up on furniture look at it this way anytime we're teaching our dogs something we're in a sense asking them a question or we're presenting a problem for example when we ask a dog to sit we're saying do you know what to do when i tell you to sit and the dog gives us a blank look basically saying no i don't know what to do when you say sit so we then give them the answer by luring them into the sit just like you can't ask another human a question and give them the answer at the exact same time you don't want to give the question an answer to your dog at the exact same time meaning you don't want to say sit at the exact moment you lure the dog into the sit position this would be known as overshadowing when two things are presented to a dog at the exact same time whatever is more relevant to the dog is what they focus on and they completely ignored the other element i'm mentioning this because it's the same when we teach our dogs leash pressure what should really be called a leash cue because we're cueing the dog into different positions this should not be seen as force unless you have a dog that is so wild and unruly that you don't have any choice but to apply force which you will come across if you train enough dogs for each dog in basic obedience training i want them to be able to follow the leash sit when lifting up on the leash and lay down when pulling down on the leash for your personal dogs you also want to be able to teach them to walk backwards with leash pressure when teaching this it makes it much easier if the dog already knows how to get into each position with a lure this helps us provide the answer for them when we give them the question with the leash pressure what i mean by that is well for example when we pull up on the leash we're saying do you know what to do when i pull up on the leash and the dog gives us a blank look and says no i don't know what to do when you pull up on the leash so we then give them the answer by luring them into the sit this is how we teach the dog leash pressure we present the pressure then we cue the dog with the food into the commanded position once this step is accomplished i start teaching the dog commands as well as the stays i try to get in two sessions each day with each dog one at the house and one while i'm on a walk when i'm at the house i'm working on everything but heel when i take them on a walk i work on loose leash walking sits automatic sits when halted down sit in motion down in motion and come when called during this time i'm also not allowing them to practice any bad behavior such as barking at strangers jumping up on people or taking treats with too much force speaking of treats make sure the owner provides the dog's food the last thing you want is for a dog you're training to have the runs now depending on the owner will depend on if i'm using corrections positive punishment and if i'm doing off leash training if they want off leash training then we'll have to use a remote training collar then we continue to work with the dog every day getting as many repetitions in as possible as tom rose says repeat repeat repeat nothing helps a dog succeed like constant repetition of training exercises i also work on proofing meaning i start working with the dog in new environments with different distractions simply choosing different routes during my walking sessions can help me accomplish this lastly when the dog goes home i provide my clients with a free copy of my dog training manual as well as a go home lesson where i break down everything i've done with their dogs basically i have them go over each step that i teach in chapter seven of my dog training manual now you don't have to provide your clients with a manual but it's good to write out each step for them in an easy to understand format this provides them with a reference so they know exactly what to do even if you're not there to tell them i want to give you an idea of what a finished stay and trained dog should look like these were accomplished in a two or three week stay in train program they're dogs that i trained back in 2015 when i was training dogs in colorado to promote my training what i used to do was i would make videos for each dog that would go through my stay and train program [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i hope everyone enjoyed today's
