this is kona's third day with me and it's time to attempt some actual training at least i hope so i'm zach george i'm a dog trainer meet my new project kona i've got just three weeks to train her and set her up for the most well-behaved life possible that means i need to work on the most common puppy issues like potty training how to actually pay attention stopping things like play biting chewing separation anxiety getting along with other animals leash walking and teaching her everything a good dog needs to know real dog training doesn't always go smoothly and that's why i'm going to show you every success and mistake and how i work through all the most challenging parts of raising a new puppy welcome to your new puppy survival guide guys it has been three days now that we've had kona and i think she's finally really adjusting i mean i think it's fair to give a dog a few days to adjust i think it's about time that we get started on kona's obedience training today we're going to go over some of the most fundamental things that every person and every puppy should know puppies are growing so fast and a lot of you might not realize this but puppies need a very specific type of puppy food needless to say this is not the time to experiment with homemade diets at all that said you still want to give your puppy premium ingredients in their food the nutritional science behind this solid gold dog food is extremely impressive anytime you're looking at a food look at the ingredients they list them from most abundant to least abundant so the first three ingredients on this one are bison ocean fish and brown rice okay let's see what kona thinks of this i promise we've been feeding her okay kona definitely loves solid gold food and solid gold has a whole line of high-end foods and supplements for your dog like bone broth and these c-meal supplements are great for their coat and their overall health save 30 on select solid gold products by going to my special link solidgoldpet.com that link will be in the description kona has had three days with us by design i've just been really letting the focus of our efforts be on getting her to adjust getting or comfortable with inertia and indie and this new environment and me and bri but i think it's about time since i only have three weeks with her to really get started on some of her core obedience that every dog really needs to know i mean if you think about it one of the fundamental things that our dogs have to know are the difference between yes and no or this is okay and that's not okay now i do want to say before we get into that particular part of the lesson that you'll find that you'll get much better results and training will be much more enjoyable if you let the emphasis of your training be on yes i think one of the best ways for a dog to learn the difference between yes and no is by teaching them how to leave something alone but by the end of this lesson kona will know how to leave a real piece of chicken alone when we drop it in front of her leave it alone let's make sure she doesn't know that so you know that she's learning this for the first time leave it so we clearly have some work to do i'm going to start this training by just using a dog treat to make it a little bit easier for her and we're going to work up to that you'll find that it's a really powerful thing when you can get your dog to do something organically from the inside out ouch look at that look how hard she's biting you see those little pin pricks that hurts i'm letting her know the treat is there and i'm gonna close my hand now the second she turns her head away i'm gonna go ahead and give her the treat to let her know i like that even if it's by accident so here's the treat yes good every time i say the word yes i really want to provide a positive outcome see that when she goes for it i close my hand because she doesn't have permission to get that yes good i'm gonna run through this a few times until i feel like she's getting it yes very good i mean you can see her brainstorming she's like maybe when i don't try he'll give it to me so she's a real smart girl you can see how she's really starting to pick this up quickly so now look at this let me i'm not even going to close my hand this time yes good really good job there you can see the wheels are turning she's demonstrating that she's understanding the concept right yes very good so now let me put a little closer yes no so you'll see i'll gently say no when she goes for no no should never come from a place of frustration when you're training your dog yes good now i think we can start introducing the basic word to her of leave it she's not necessarily going to absorb what the term leave it means in one lesson but you got to start somewhere so leave it yes leave it yes leave it i'm just using some soft dog treats today and i'm breaking them up into little pieces so i can get lots of extra use out of them leave it yes good all right so so far pretty good right now let's make this a little bit more challenging for her let's see if we can give it motion you might know that things that move really get our dog's attention a lot more so as demonstrated by the by the toy the same is true with a treat notice even if i say leave it and i drop it she's almost certainly going to go for it because we changed a variable there did you see that we made it move we're not just holding it that's harder for a dog to lay off something that's moving i'm going to have it move a little bit less this time and when she goes forward i'm going to cover it up we haven't had to say no too much here and that's how it should be you want the emphasis of your training to be on the word yes on what your dog is doing right this isn't a magic trick about teaching your dog how to leave a treat alone this is showing them the basics of impulse control so the treat is just a metaphor for the squirrel for the dog for other things that cause them to get excited in the future you know teaching them how to leave something alone that they want to go after is a really basic concept that every dog needs to understand yes good so a lot more restraint that time did you see that yeah you can see her getting it right when you look at her body language and her eyes you can see she's really trying to process it it's a beautiful thing to watch a dog learn something new like this leave it yes good girl leave it see it's hard it's like why would i leave that alone it's right there this is a really fundamental thing when it comes to establishing communication now i'm adding time i'm asking her to leave it alone for a period of time here yes leave it alone let's go ahead and up the annie a little bit let's see if we can make this a little bit more challenging for her just so that she really gets it i've got a piece of chicken breast that i use for training right here so since this is dramatically better tasting to her i'm going to start from square one again so changing a variable this time leave it yes this is probably her first time i would guess of ever having real chicken as well so she's gonna like this yes leave it yes look how quick she's learning i mean we've been doing this minutes leave it i can't emphasize how important this is for your long-term training so take your time on this one leave it good girl yes so i'm gonna go ahead and give her a treat from over here i think it's a little bit more clear if you give them the treat than if they get reinforced from picking up the stuff you don't want off the ground i told you by the end of this lesson you can teach any dog to leave something alone without force and i really do mean every dog in this case i mean i remember in some cases when i would teach classes and i would do this it could take up to seven eight sometimes ten minutes maybe with some really tough dogs but i mean what's 10 minutes most dogs learn this within just a minute or two so it's a really exciting thing to teach a dog now i want to emphasize don't get too excited or too cocky here just because your dog will leave a piece of meat alone when you drop it in front of them does not mean they have generalized leave some garbage alone on a walk or leave my dinner alone when i set it on the table so it still takes a lot of training in those specific contexts to really teach a dog how to understand this concept but this is where you start leave it alone yes and for those of you with a new dog get both of my books they're really going to be a great reference guide and they go along with my youtube videos really well i'll have a link in the description potty training with kona has been going pretty well i do have to admit she's had a couple of accidents so far and both of those are absolutely my fault for letting her run around this immediate area while i was checking an email or something so i'm gonna get better with that just being honest with you i thought something that might help would be to have these whiz smart pads by the door so that she's like really conditioned to at least start going towards an exit when she feels the need to go on her first night these pads came in really handy she actually pooped on one which was great if you live in a high-rise building where it's difficult to go outside or if you just want your dog to be able to use a pad when you travel or when the weather's bad it just gives you options one of my favorite features you see that those stay put tabs one of the reasons that they're so absorbent is because they're made from recycled baby diapers unused baby diapers i'll have a link in the description wizsmart.com zach and you can use code zac 10 to get 10 off and get free shipping too so now we're going to teach kona how to look at me when i ask look at me is really important because it's really your dog just demonstrating that they're paying attention to you so if you can't get your dog's eyes on you in a certain situation that means you don't really have their attention we can start off a couple of ways so i could do something like yes once i had eye contact there i said yes so do you have any eyes in there yes so i really want her looking to my eyes because i'm going to be able to more easily communicate with her when she's looking at my face and i'll be able to read her better as well so it's a really good thing to teach now if your dog is less responsive another thing you can do is just hold up a treat to your eyes see that yes look at me yes i skipped the head a little bit there but i i could just kind of feel she was gonna do it because i like to phase in hold up a treat to look at me yes to that hand signal once you get them looking at a treat you can really easily face in the hand signal pointing to your eyes look at me do you notice i'm on the ground too it's really a lot easier to communicate with a dog especially a new dog when you're close to them look at the distance between our eyes it's you know just a little over a foot right now here look at me yes look at me yes so she's really coming to appreciate that word yes yes and as before when you're teaching the term look at me it's going to take a a few training sessions for her to really grasp that concept but do be very deliberate when you use the term in other words which you really have a committed look at me before saying it just so she can really start to internalize what that request means look at me using a high-pitched voice like that can be helpful yes nice long look at me there duration matters if you can start getting increased focus and duration like that that's always a good thing i'm using really small pieces of chicken by the way really got her attention look at me look at me yes i got two look at me i said yes after the second one i'm following that up with a reward so this is the beginning of throwing in some random reinforcement here and there so sometimes you know cheating and stealing a look at me and getting two for the price of one is always nice when they're young so we've gone over leave it we've gone over look at me now one of my absolute favorite things to teach any dog it's the first thing that you really teach your dog that just feels magical we're gonna combine leave it and look at me i call this the leave it look at me combo i know very original title isn't it we're gonna distract her and then we're gonna say look at me yes good girl not only did she leave it but i was able to get her attention on my eyes leave it look at me look at that guys see that yes so there's something she really wants just to make it clear she's aware that it's there look at me yes there's something that she really wants real chicken and i'm able to get her eyes off of the thing she wants a 12 week old puppy and onto my eyes look at me yes she might just be a genius she's learning that what pays is to pay attention to me and not the chicken fundamental exercise right here easy to teach this is the kind of thing that when you teach your dog this you really start to get traction on your communication leave it oops shoot oh boy okay leave it good girl look at me yes once we have this we can really build on top of it she's really off to a good start so i'm excited so her stamina is doing pretty good i'm not seeing many signs of frustration out of her at all right now i think we can keep going with this that's another benefit to positive reinforcement training if you're really patient and you go at your dog's pace you'll find that their attention span should go a pretty long time the next thing i want to cover with you is something we call lure training lord training is where you coax your dog into a specific physical position by getting them to follow a treat with their nose so we can actually teach a lot with lore training for example right now i'm hoping to go over with kona sit lie down up maybe stand and maybe even a trick or two i don't know let's see what we can do make sure you're using a treat your dog likes i guess we'll stick with the chicken here kona i'm gonna make it difficult for her to get the whole thing and i'm comfortable with her nibbling i mean she does have sharp teeth but let's see if we can lure her into a sit yes the second her butt hit the ground i said yes all right if you're comfortable with them nibbling like that that's the way to do it down yes good girl in other words what a lot of people will do is they'll keep it a few inches from their dog's nose and that that can work as you saw there but if you're really having trouble you want them you want to keep it glued to their nose and go real slow sit good i'm releasing a little bit as she hits the desired position down it'll release the rest of it there up down i mean you can see how simple it is how willing a dog is to follow down good girl you can call it up or you can call it sit in this case sometimes i'll call it up because it is a different motion than sitting from this position sit yes good girl i really should just focus on yes right here yes yes now let's see if we can get her to go and do a stand on all fours yes nice so sit down up stand pretty amazing yes there's a whole art to luring i mean you can get real notice how my wrist is twisting and turning trying to find that sweet spot for a particular trick can be a lot of fun i like that it's kind of a precursor to a bow right there so i'm choosing to reward her for following the lure i'm trying to get those feet to go back into that bow yes good and i'm saying yes and pulling the treat away before she has a chance to go into a down here yes because that's going to be the tendency if i just keep it there she's going to plop into a down like that and see that's where i've gotta make sure i really focus on the timing of the treat yes good in other words i'm happy to have her hit a quarter of a second bow as your dog begins to understand the concept you'll start phasing out the lure you might do something like that sit so you can see how the lore gradually evolves into a hand signal eventually you'll just be able to say sit down up stand it's important to kind of teach your dog both hand signals and actual words they both come in handy in different scenarios and so you might notice too since she's doing so well with this sometimes i'm rewarding after the third thing that she does because she's doing it so reliably now if she wasn't doing it as reliably i'd be a little bit more liberal so sit down yes i gotta sit and a down for a treat this is the kind of thing that you'll do five minutes here five minutes there throughout the first few weeks of training as your dog gets better and better with this you start increasing the distance at which you ask them to do it so your goal after a few days of working on this might be to have your dog sit yes have your dog sit while you stand up now i think if i said lie down she doesn't quite know what i mean there but if i just take a step back and i do that down good she knows so find where the communication is effective and kind of work at that range so right there she's thinking about popping back up but if i do this she does yes that's the fine line in space that you've got to identify and build from there if that makes sense and then stand yes second she comes up into that stand i want to reward her there good job girl lie down yes really good improvement you can tell there's a puppy in the house because my shoes are untied lure training is a fantastic way to get your dog to start understanding physical positions that they'll need to be going into when you ask them to like sit lie down up and and so forth naturally every single dog should know their name right i mean for exactly this reason i've got to be able to get her attention easily off that rug she's not allowed to chew on the rug so i find that introducing a dog's name to them in a high-pitched voice can be very effective so let's try kona yes see that see how she came right up to me when i said kona now you can gradually phase in a more normal tone of voice well why would you want to we've been training quite a while here and she's starting to wander coda yes so as she starts to walk towards me there i'm gonna do that i mean this is the beginning of burning in a really good come when called or a recall but it really is that simple just pairing their name with a tree kona yes good girl i'm going to let her attention drift again and give you one more example kona yes there you go good job so these are the things you should be working on first you don't necessarily train these all in one day if you really focus on refining the things we went over in this lesson leave it look at me their name lore training potty training and giving them a great diet you should be very pleased with how quickly your dog learns just remember to be patient and always customize your particular training program to your individual dog taking into account their particular strengths and weaknesses alright she's had plenty of training now and it's really important to balance play with training for a young puppy and you'll remember that kona was initially pretty nervous of inertia you can really start to see her come out of her shell now it's so much fun to watch two dogs truly open up to one another for the very first time i think this looks like really good play right here perfectly measured i'm really pleased with how inertia isn't playing too rough so yesterday kona showed some glimmers of bravery but during this play session i feel like we caught the exact moment that kona really got confident with inertia you can tell by her playful body language and her play vows and just her overall behavior i think one of the absolute best things you can do with a young puppy is to get them interacting with other dogs in a way that both dogs feel comfortable with sometimes that means rambunctious play but other dogs might want to just go and chill out and take a nap by really encouraging this kind of behavior now we're improving the odds that they'll acquire really good social skills to use with other dogs in the future at least that's the hope this is so healthy for kona as well to like get some experience with a really active dog like inertia play biting is good all right guys so this is night three with kona i'm gonna stay down here at least one more night she did really much better last night than the night before so that's good nonetheless we're gonna see how she does tonight still got the mattress set up down here probably gonna let these guys sleep upstairs so they're less distracting to her but she's doing really good in the crate so right off the bat she is pretty relaxed straight away oh what a girl well she did excellent she's getting very comfortable we're gonna take her outside the first thing i'll do in the morning is let her outside and then i'll let her run around and play with inertia for a little bit both dogs are really enjoying their play sessions i'm so encouraged by this this is something i'm going to continue to do every single day that i have kona although i've got to be honest right now it looks like my dog inertia is the only one getting any energy out here so check out solid gold's puppy food or adult
