I'm about to share five dog training hacks that will not only completely transform your dog's training but will also change the way you think about interacting with your Canine Companion forever if you've got a dog and you've tried every Training Method out there high value treats long lines Corrections prong colors or even dragging your dog back to you by the collar then you're in the right place I can guarantee you won't find this advice anywhere else on the internet to get the most out of this video I need you to set aside everything you think you know about dog training follow each step carefully and I promise it will revolutionize your dog's attitude towards training like nothing else and just to keep things interesting if number five doesn't completely blow your mind I'll get a picture of Zack George tattooed on my ass all right let's dive into the first trade secret teaching a preac marker now I know your dog is way more interested in everything else around them squirrels Birds you name it so why on Earth would they possibly listen to you but imagine this what if we could bottle up all that excitement from the environment and use it to our advantage well with a preac marker we can do exactly that the preac marker is essentially giving permission to your dog to do what they want as a reward for doing what you asked for first in other words we use the environment as a reinforcer and of course we're only going to do this with things that are safe for our dog to actually engage with most people focus on having their dog come back to them for a treat or toy reward and completely forget that the environment itself can be the most powerful reinforcer of all so how do we teach this here's how so if we want to teach the preac principle super important that we first have a leash on our dog to make sure that we're able to stop them just shooting off and going and get the toy or the ball or whatever we might be using so I got a toy here for my dog star I'm going to use a collar the first little thing I'm going to do is I'm going to take the toy I'm going to throw it and I'm going to hold him back I might want to do that with a leash or potentially I can grab his collar some dogs don't like having their collar grabbed so just be careful of that once I have my dog desire to want to go and get the thing I give my new marker and then I release the dog so our marker is Tango as in the drink without further Ado I'm going to take my toy whever my dog wants I'm going to take him on leash I'm going to take it out I'm going to throw it over there I'm going to give my word tango and I'm going to release the dog I might want to do this for a day two days for 10 reps 20 reps until my dog starts to understand that word means go and get it so the next step was we're going to ask our dog to do some really simple obedience so we might use a Sit might use a little bit of eye contact but we're going to give our Command Papa we're going to then hold the leash to make sure our dog just doesn't bug her off he might get up here and I might just use a bit of leash pressure to bring it back into Behavior once that stabilizes tangle the dog should hear it and then shoot because we've conditioned that this marker must be different to our come to me marker but I'm going to show you how to do that later on in this video so then once we have that the same rules apply I don't want to give him all the leash in the world Papa then I'm going to start asking for strings of behavior remember we're going to initially ask for a little to give a lot so I'm not going to ask him while he's next to the toy to come back to me to get the toy baby recall star heill Tango you need a leash on the dog to teach this then what we can start doing is asking for a lot to give a little sit stock heel tangle good boy and we can just build this up over time so remember step one we ask for nothing condition the cute Tango it's different to our come to me c step two Papa a little bit of obedience the command your dog knows easiest Tango if he doesn't respond to your go away marker here or your preac marker here you might want to encourage him run with him how that might look drop Papa Papa he broke the command Tango we might go with the dog okay and we go together that's fine so you might not just respond to the word straight away over time he will no problem then once we get good St heel we can start throwing tangle more complex things together together I don't expect your dog to do a great long Focus heel here but good one for recall I hold the leash so he can't go and get it stock heel Tango and then we can start using the things around us the things our dog finds most reinforcing whether it's rolling in that fox poo there whether it's the toy over there Papa Mike down Tango so once we've established our preac marker through maybe play or even at meal time for your dog we can start using it out and about and remember it's our dog's permission queue to go and act with the environment we can reward our obedience heal with Tango the environment not just food and toys that we might have on our person so there we go there's an example of using it in real life so I can go now into the woods and explore and if I want to call him back stuck heal and he went and got his toy Tango I can then use it to really strengthen our recall our obedience our sit our down our close whatever you want to use it for okay very potent tool and he's doing a poop this method known as prac principle or Grandma's law because like Grandma would say finish your chores and then you can go and play it's a powerful training tool and once you harness it alongside the other tips I'm about to share it'll change the game for you and your dog in practice is like when the Miss says do the dishes and then you can go and play around the golf for the lads guess what those dishes are getting done and they'll be spotless next up is what I like to call a a dog training law rather than just a hack the 85% rule the 85% learning rule was made Popular by Robert C Wilson and his team in a 2019 study from the University of Arizona they discovered that optimal learning happens when success is balanced with a bit of failure specifically when individuals or in our case succeed about 85% of the time they stay engaged and learn more efficiently than if things are too easy or too hard so what does this mean for your dog it means the success rate in your training should dictate the difficulty of the environment of the next one in simple terms if you want your dog to progress as fast as possible for every two Corrections you should reward them around eight times too much reward and your dog's going to get bored complacent and lose motivation too much correction your dog might get frustrated anxious and stop learning altogether think of it like riding a bike uphill if the path is too flat you're not building any strength in your legs because there's no challenge but if the hill is too steep you're going to struggle lose momentum and probably give up but when the incline is just right challenging but still manageable you keep going you get stronger and you make progress that is the 85% rule the perfect level of challenge that keeps your dog learning and motivated without burning out now how does this look in principle let me give you you a quick demo so I brought out Mera and abas to help us demonstrate the 85% rule with a little bit of recall I'm going to act as a distraction Abbas is going to obviously be the Handler for his dog if she comes back to him she's going to get paid with food she fails to respond to the recall he's going to use a little bit of leash pressure to get her to respond it's my job as the distraction in this rehearsal which we should be doing for all of our dogs obedience to dial up and down my level of distraction based on the dog's level of success so if we're 100% my job make things harder for meor if we're less than like that 85% we're down at 50 60% I need to make things easier for meor I can't overemphasize how important it is for rehearsals to be happening so employ a stooge employ your friend with a dog and make sure you're conscious of where you're taking your dog depending on how successful they are at that particular training activity so we're going to go through it you call her here okay success yes she going get paid ready M here nice and we're successful again M here okay we still at 100% And this is a train dog a train dog knows when she when they see a booby trap come come ready what's this what's this what's this what's this come good girl good girl here nice okay we're 100% I'm going to try to make things harder good we'll give her that one good you can pay for that here good girl clever girly clever girly I got it I got it got here okay we're still at 100% what's that five from five that's good okay we make it harder now I have a toy now I know miror likes a toy here nice now we're six from six that's good M here oh yes so now I can really up the aunti now what constitutes is a failure here if abas needs to use the leash to bring the dog back that is a failure and if we get too many failures we compensate for that in how difficult we're making it for our dog here nice still 100% too easy we can afford a failure now because we've got money in the bank we're 100% here nice nice okay that's good I'm going to go get her friend starky out that might set her off M here yes go here and that was our first failure because if we had to use the leash and caller M here nice yes very nice okay so there you go we did a session we maybe done 12 15 recalls we had one failure in there who knows what our success rate is going to be perhaps we could even afford a second failure or two but we just need to be considerate that our success rate is high our failure rate is at that 10 15 20% Mark is okay if we're up there we got high scores 90 95% 9 out of 10 let's call it we can afford to make things harder but if we're maybe five and six out of 10 I have to make things easier that could dictate where we take our dog what we put our dog in front of how much of a distraction our sto is being is going to dictate our progression 85% 80% it means we're going to progress quicker this is applicable to our dog's reactivity to our sit to our down to our stage whatever it needs to be of course I'm not asking any want to sit there telling each little win with a pen and paper but this is a handy rule of THB to keep in mind when you're in a training session it's all about finding that balance your dog's progress will thank you for it okay so we're all guilty of this next one we all talk to our dogs way too much right and somewhere in that stream of verbal diarrhea we toss out a few words that we hope will carry important meaning for our dogs later on like their name we use it for everything to get their attention to interrupt them even to chest dies them but here's the kicker we then expect the same sound because that's be real that's all it is to our dog to be super meaningful in a specific context later on like recall spoiler alert it doesn't work instead use a word or sound that's rarely if ever a part of everyday conversation something artificial like a clicker or a whistle this ensures that when we use it it's for special occasions not every moment of the day think of your marker or your important queue like a uh a battery pack it's got to be charged up with energy before it can power anything right well your reward marker needs to be charged with value before it means anything to your dog here's how I charge a basic reward marker and you can try this at home today so how do we teach that all important marker or que that we're going to use for recall or maybe our reward marker so it's potent it's reliable and it's powerful okay so I'm going to show you the Newton's Cradle method there a variation of a method to load a marker that loads of dog trainers use we have a slightly modified version though I'm going to use Ranger again the reason I'm going to use Ranger is I'm going to pick a word that he's might never have heard before definitely not a marker to him before and we're going to see how quickly we can make that marker word important as I mentioned I don't like to use his name for the recall and this is why you might hear me saying funny words in either German or the fonetic alphabet with my dogs cuz they're not cropping up in everyday conversation I want something to be potent and important to him so we're going to pick a word we're going to use carrot cake and we're going to make that our marker again leash and color for this and I would actually normally use a flexi lead for this but I got some hate online for using a flexi lead so okay so without further Ado we take something our dog wants if you don't follow the last step of this video you're probably not going to be able to achieve this so take note of this but follow the last step of the video very simply I'm going to deliver my marker throw some food deliver my marker throw some food and then when he picks his head up I'm going to deliver my marker again I'm going to move away from him and I'm going to give a jackpot reward so a handful of food okay as you can see all my dogs are food motivated and that makes training nice and easy for me and if you follow the last step of this video I'll show you exactly how to achieve that so without further Ado the Newton's Cradle method cuz if you've ever seen one it looks a bit like a Newton's Cradle give the marker throw give the marker throw why am I throwing to instigate our dog's prey drive reinforcing in itself we got the food that's reinforcing and the desire to catch and and the jackpots and the desire to even sniff and find the food as well we've got loads of reinforcing ingredients here associated with my marker so when my dog hears it he should prick his ears up but here's how we're going to do it carrot cake and let him eat the food when his head comes up I'm going to give it again carrot cake he's not going to know what it means to begin with carrot cake carrot cake carrot cake carrot cake We Go Again carrot cake carrot cake carrot cake and a jackpack back at me I get my clients to do it for 6 days on an empty stomach first thing using slightly higher value food in their kibble last point of this video super important how do we know if our Markus charge well we get our dog to do something isn't training they may be asleep in another room we wait till they're not focusing on us anymore and we're going to deliver our marker if they respond if they turn around if they give us that 180 then yeah we are ready to start using it out and about and what are we teaching here yeah it's a reward marker that we can ask our dog to sit and down and then deliver that marker or we can just use it as a recall and again you can use a whistle or a clicker for this I've used both of them with Ranger in the past so I thought I'd deliver this tutorial with a fresh marker something new something he's never heard before okay so let's see if we can get him to switch off and we're going to give our marker and let's see just after nine reps if we have any efficacy there if we have a potency carrot cake there we go even just after nine reps it can create that little bit of a response but we really need to condition it so spending 6 days doing it 10 to 15 repetitions per session by the end you'll have a very potent marker there you go okay so that's what we want to see the dog come out of the behavior ignite come to life and then and only then do we start using it in real life but don't jump the gun and try this just yet there's still a couple more pieces of crucial advice that I need to share before you give it a go or it could all be for nothing okay next up think of your dog like one of those little old ladies Glu to the slot machines in Las Vegas you know the ones they got those star shaped glasses on they're pulling the Le over and over waiting for the big payout now if these slot machines gave her a dollar every single time she played it' get pretty boring pretty quick she'd lose interest because there's no thrill but since the p is random and rare her brain gets a huge spike in dopamine keeping her hooked and that's the magic of uncertainty and it's not just gambling scientist Robert spolski discovered that mammals are far more likely to repeat a behavior when there's a maybe involved it's the same reason you can't resist checking your phone maybe maybe you have a notification maybe you match that person on Tinder maybe you've been paid and so on a consistent reward schedule becomes predictable and dull which actually lowers motivation so rewarding your dog every single time they perform the same behavior can actually backfire in the long run here's the fix switch to a intermittent reward system as a starting point once your dog understands a behavior there on after for every four times your dog performs that behavior reward them twice use the preac print principle that we spoke about earlier once and on the fourth cue an alternate Behavior you can adjust those ratios to suit your training but this keeps your dog on their toes motivated and most importantly focused on you the randomness keeps them engaged much like the slot machine does for our Vegas lady I'll give you a quick example here so now I'm going to demonstrate a very simple intermittent reward schedule so we're going to use Ranger for this there's a couple of ways we can finish a behavior we can reward the behavior we can release the behavior so release the dog into the environment using our preac marker or we can give an alternate Behavior it's almost impossible to not reward behavior in a sense because if the dog gives the behavior the release is a reward the food or toy delivery is also a reward so if we want to not reward the behavior to create that intermittency then we want to tie on an alternate Behavior instead and perhaps reward or release that okay so I've got Ranger in front of me I'm going to be calling him to heal and I'm going to call him to heal four times in total I'm going to I'm going to reward a couple I might release one I might just then ask for an alternate Behavior instead okay doesn't have to be overly complicated here I just want to get out of the Habit once my dog has established the behavior of whether it's just a recall or a sit or a down to start intermittent reward schedule as opposed to paying every single time which is very quickly going to flatten the dog out make him bored that predictability is is going to make things too boring for our dog I'm just going to throw some food over there Ranger Foose so I call him into heel yes and I can re reward that one okay so now for rep number two Ranger Foose okay okay I can just release him again now range is a little bit Rusty so this is going to be like train an untrained dog that's okay there's our pre-mac marker okay go get it whatever you want to call it and I call him again Ranger fo down okay boy he wants a little bit of food but he's not getting it cuz I'm releasing him that was my timate behavior and then last one Ranger Foose guess I going reward him and then Ranger is going to be guessing oh am I going to get paid am I going to get told to down instead am I going to get released to the environment or to play with my brother or to sniff that we weed wherever it needs to be again doesn't have to be overly complicated I just want to get out of the habit of yes and pay yes and pay yes and pay every single time and just making my my reward variable whether it's environment whether it's food delivery from me or whether it's just hey nothing right now mate I'm not going to pay you here but maybe next time and it is that maybe next time that creates potency inside our obedience which is what we want to look for because that's going to give us that reliability and nice sharp turns the dog coming back to us and again we're talking a lot about recall today because of you guys sitting at home you probably just want a dog that comes back when he's called so these are the examples I'm going to give okay on to the next one and finally we have arrived at our golden nugget of dog training wisdom one that goes against almost everything you've been told the power of work ethic honestly this might be the single most important thing you will ever learn about your dog stick around because of we're about to flip your dog training world upside down I can already hear you now mouthing at your phone but my dog doesn't care about food well trust me we're about to change that today we're diving into the real reason why your dog isn't motivated and we're going to build that drive from the ground up there are two main ways to increase your dog's motivation the first we increase the value of the reward sure you can break out the bacon cover it in cheese but that method has a limit there's only so much you can feed your dog before it stops being effective the second option far more sustainable is to increase your dog's capacity to work look for the food that's where we take their essential food the food they need to survive and we make it just a little bit harder to earn day by day think of it like this Jeff basos before he was the richest man alive was working minimum wage at McDonald's Elon Musk he was scrubbing boilers in a sawmill for $18 an hour wearing a hazmat suit in tight tunnels Warren Buffett was up at the codor delivering papers for pennies it wasn't glamorous but it built their work ethic and here's the key they didn't need bigger paychecks to keep them motivated their work ethic was forged in the process meanwhile we all know those rich kids who are born into money and throw it all away before they get started in life why because they never leared the value of working for something so what does this have to do with your dog well we're not going to ask your dog to walk a tight rope for a single piece of kibble but we are going to increase their capacity to work for that kibble bit by bit and when we do that we're not just training the dog we're supercharging their focus motivation and ultimately your relationship now here exactly how we do it we start by feeding your dog their essential food but gradually make it more challenging to earn and I'm going to show you exactly how to do this but the key here is gradual progression over time that kibble that used to be at a value of four out of 10 becomes a five and then a six until eventually it's a 10 out of 10 you're not increasing the quantity of food you're increasing the value of the work to get the food take a peek of how this looks in practice so here's a tip that's literally going to change the game in your dog training forever however you must follow each and every step for this to be effective our preac principle isn't going to work unless you do this our charging of a marker isn't going to work unless you do this our recall 85% roll isn't going to work unless you do this for a week two weeks however long this process takes you're going to ditch the high value treats you're going to go and get a high quality kibble or raw food or whatever too many times and and and I'm no V I'm no nutritionist but too many times I see dogs coming into our Academy on cardboard food they have to eat a kilo of it a day just to hit the nutritional value they're bagfuls of poop because of their food is packed with fillers click the link in the description we'll send you a food comparison guide to make sure you're feeding your dog the best food possible and also saving money I'm going to show you today how we start building that work ethic in our dogs so they're crazy motivated for food outside so we can use more reinforcement less pressure cerate a beautiful relationship with our dog with Speedy potent powerful obedience that will only be effective if your dog has good work ethic the high value treats they work they work for 3 Days the novelty wears off and then they're no longer useful so if you've experienced that and your dog is getting fussy over food in training you need to follow this process the process is making the dog's food more difficult to attain each and every day we're going to feed our dog twice a day here's how we're going to start okay free feed out of a bow only when our dog eats all of the food are we going to advance the criteria make it 5% harder 10% harder maybe but no more because of if I say to my dog who's who can potentially be fussy over food hey I'm going to just keep it in my pocket and I'm going to starve you until you eat food outside eventually they'll eat they're going to lose loads of weight and it's not very nice but what we ultimately teach our dog is you only have to work when you're hungry if we follow that method but if we follow this method we gradually really increase food motivation and food Dad okay so if our dog decides they don't want to eat the food that's fine we take it away and you can feed your dog or give your dog an option to eat two or three times a day or sometimes even four is absolutely fine they're not going to starve themselves they're not stupid and remember at this stage we're not asking them to do anything hard it's from a bowl once they eat two full meals from the bowl we can start making things harder then we might go to something like this just a slow feeder harder to get the same food once we do that go there this is still inside the house by the way your dog might get to this point and go like hey not worth it the juice isn't worth the squeeze okay we take it away eventually a little bit of hunger is going to kick in and they're going to go yep you know what it's worth my while to do this the dog eats the food once we have two full meals done this method I'm going to let you in on a secret here we can advance to our cardboard box here so you get a cardboard box pop it on its side and take the food go in the cardboard box great for a nervous dog okay we want two full completed meals with this method and you're not going to fly through it like Stark has today cuz he's crazy food motivated because he's been through a similar process as a puppy great now we have that we go cardboard box again take the food now he's got to work okay now he's starting to get it and once you've had your dog like this just let him eat it let him eat it that's theirs it's them to access you don't want to be ping and poking around here don't to create any issues so once your dog is eaten out of the open box they can see the food they're willing to get hold of the food and work for the food go over the top wrestle the Box a little bit then we can start the hand feeding process now important at this stage we start this inside the house and we take a portion of their food twice a day for starky that might be too lots of 350 G if your dog doesn't know the fancy heel or the spins or anything like that or or go into the middle it doesn't matter just get them used to following the hand boy good lad now we're just up in the ante we're saying hey is this juice worth the squeeze I'm not going to use my marker here cuz I only want to use my marker when I have motivation if I have no motivation I don't want to charge a marker so many people trying to charge a marker teach a recall and the dog doesn't want what you have we have to build that want and desire first and with methods like this that's how we do it we've completed two full meals then we're going to head outside the house and then we do the same thing again we might just do some chasing we might just do some heel work lad we might do some middles okay it doesn't matter your dog doesn't need to do the fancy stuff you don't need at this stage a crazy good communication system you want crazy motivation first then we can install the communication system because of we have the motivation you're not going to get anyone to work for you if they've won the lottery once our dog is then willing to work just in the garden fine you don't need to do this out and about for their regular food only then would I ever think about incorporating any non-essential food so we might take our Pate like I used in the Newton's Cradle video earlier and start loading a very potent marker that way but if you skip these steps no training is going to work and we're playing Fair on the dog every single day every single meal just a little bit harder to attain then only then do we get the work coming from within not external stimuli you have to remember a lot of your dog's problems reactivity there issues come from within big feelings inside so unless we change how the dog operates on the inside we're never going to change the dog outside in I hope that makes sense and I hope that really conveys how important building work ethic is in the dog and I promise if you do that that is going to completely change the game for you and your dog so there's five pieces of advice that you might never thought of and if you want to supercharge your training then hit that subscribe button and the little bell catch you next time ...
