Are you looking to become a professional dog trainer? In this video, I'm going to tell you exactly how to go about it. When I decided to switch careers many years ago, I first encountered a trainer at a workshop as I was running a rescue at the time. My background was in education. I thought, wow, teaching plus animals equals trainer. When I started to look into how to become a trainer, the information out there was often varied and confusing. It's important to note that there are currently no regulations regarding professional training, and anyone can just open a TikTok account and call themselves a trainer, meaning there's no required specific education, testing, or certification process to demonstrate that you've completed further education to become a certified trainer. Of course, this can lead to lots of issues with folks claiming to be trainers without the experience, credentials, nor education to understand how to teach and appropriately modify behavior without creating new issues. Folks may become dog trainers through some type of mentorship situation where they train under someone. There are also valid programs designed to teach you what you need to know and to provide you with hands on experience so that you can demonstrate understanding and skill proficiency. There are also programs which lead to certification like the well-known and respected Karen Pryor Academy or KPA, as well as independent certification bodies who test but don't provide education such as the Certified Certification Counsel for Professional Dog Trainers. To get started, if you're considering animal training, I think the following are some places to begin. Number one, you want to have a passion for working with dogs or cats or birds or lions and people. Also, I like to often say most of the training is for the loop and of the leash or the human end. So your people skills will be key as you will need to work with both people and animals. Number two, you should have a clear understanding that there are different training modalities. There are those which employ the use of aversive to stop or decrease behavior which come with dangerous side effects and those which seek to teach animals what to do and then reinforce those behaviors. I recommend that the program that you choose relies specifically on positive reinforcement to teach and change behaviors. Number three, you want to be prepared for the financial and time commitments required. An intensive professional program like Karen Pryor Academy takes about 20 hours per week for six months. Too any credible program will require an investment. However, if you are making a career move, it's important to invest in you and a quality education. Okay. Throwing a disclaimer in here, I'm partial to Karen Pryor Academy as I have been an instructor with them for a number of years. If you would like to train to become a professional dog trainer, I currently have a completely online course enrolling now. I'll leave the link in the description. Now back to the remaining points. Four, you want to remember that training is always evolving, so you should be prepared to be a lifelong learner. That is that once you complete a program like the KPA Dog Trainer Professional program, that's not the end of the line. All quality certifications require annual CEU's or continuing educational units. This enables you to keep up on the latest information and science about behavior and training as you earn your CEU’s to maintain certifications. Number five, you should think about your specific niche interests. That is, every trainer doesn't need to focus in the same area, nor have all of the expertise. It's important to continue learning, rely on your community, and network when something is beyond your current level of knowledge. To wrap-up up becoming a professional trainer can be a rewarding career choice from working independently as a small business owner, to working in collaboration with a veterinarian, to focusing on puppies or separation anxiety the options are vast. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions and if you're ready to start, don't forget a new Karen Pryor Academy completely online course that I'm teaching is accepting applications now. ...
