a lot of dog owners really don't like getting outside and training when the weather's bad and it's cold and rainy outside but I actually think there are so many benefits to training outside in the rain that a lot of people don't realize and so in this video I just want to take you guys on a rainy day walk and to talk about the benefits of training in the rain okay down okay down okay so the best part about when it's raining outside is everybody is afraid of the rain especially dog owners and so they all stay inside and the benefit of that is you get access to environments that you that previously were off limits right so both of these dogs are fully offly strained obviously but during the day like especially when it's sunny out this park is so busy like like it's so busy there's Walkers and Runners and bikers and kids and families and it's it's just super busy and so if we came here the dogs would just be in obedience pretty much the whole time you know they'd have to be walking right next to me just cuz we're passing someone like every 30 seconds and so it's not particularly fun or enjoyable for them and so as a result we don't come here too often when it's busy out we go somewhere else we go to a park down the street that's a lot more less it's a lot less distracting it's a lot less busy much more open space for them to just roll around and be dogs but when it's raining out you've got access to places like this and of course you can see both the dogs are off leash but don't be confused I'm not just letting them off leash be just because obviously these dogs are fully off leash trained and so I can make control at any point down right and if I couldn't do that these dogs wouldn't be off leash right okay look this look this little guy I was like what is that thing that's not a wabbit is it now some of you guys might be thinking like okay miles this looks great you know with your fully trained dogs but listen my dog is reactive you know he's got behavior problems he doesn't listen to me I can't do this stuff I disagree I think with those dogs doing this type of stuff is even more important all right think about it from the dog's perspective how often does your dog just get to go out have fun and be a dog with you how how often does that happen a lot of people with reactive dogs the dog's highlight of the day is going out on their one short little walk around the neighborhood and blowing up and being an idiot towards other dogs that's literally the highlight of their day that's the biggest adrenaline dump that they get they're pent up they're frustrated they're super aroused because they they haven't been outside all day and you're frustrated at them and you're angry at them and it's just this horrible it's just this horrible way of living with the do when I'm working with a reactive dog or I'm training a dog in the beginning I'm constantly looking for things I can do like this just how can I go outside and have fun with the dog today that's what I'm thinking about if you've got a reactive dog take advantage of these moments when the weather is bad outside no one is out and you're able to go out into the world places that you typically wouldn't be able to go to and you can just have fun with the dog right if you're in the beginning stages of training obviously don't have them off a leash have them on a long line or a flexi leash and just go out into the world have fun run around have a good time let your dog just be a dog in the environment let them experience the world around them give them a couple recalls from here to there and that's it people really underestimate the importance of that people forget they're so focused on the behavior problems and eliminating the bad stuff that they forget just they forget their dog is this social animal animal living in the house with them and when you tap into that and you can just get out into a new environment and just explore and roll around together it's so fun it does so much for your relationship together and so much for the dog's outlook on life in general feel so beautiful just [Music] wo wow that's so cool yeah Seas it he wants it all right guys let's go you little nerd where Arrow jumps into the pond so one little tip I have for you guys is after your dog takes a poop put them in a down and this just keeps them in one position and so you not worried about paying attention to them while you're scooping up their poop all right let's try some dual dual healing we don't do this very much heel orbit heel he wants to go heal with Rachel behind the camera good nice job we actually never practiced this ever good boys good heal good job guys good we actually never practice this but they figure it out pretty good not super clean okay but that's okay and this is what it's about guys just letting your dogs be able to just roll around in the environment just be free just be dogs orbit when he gets a little too far I just call him good job buddy good job we're going to go take a left down this way look the creek is going look at that it's raging yeah here he comes here he comes here he comes Arrow orbit yeah yeah yeah ready out come on just a little rainy day fetch out spit sit I don't want them to run into each other come here nice nice buddy nice job yeah Arrow out so I call this Duo Fetch and it's when I play fetch with both the dogs at the same time and I know some of you guys are going to ask how I taught it so of course I teach fetch individually so each dog knows the game very well and all of the rules involved in the game and then when I start training them together the most important thing in this game is impulse control so each dog has their own balls but they need to learn that they can't go after each other's balls so Arrow's got his ball and Orbit's got his ball you are not allowed to take each other's balls all right even if they're on the floor even if I throw it you're not allowed to chase the other dog's ball right and I had to start out just very easy in the beginning of course like Arrow was making this mistake orbit picks it up pretty quick but Arrow he really really really really really wanted Orbit's ball and so I would have to punish every time he went after Orbit's ball good catch punish it every time do not do that do not go after his ball whether it's on the floor whether I throw it you cannot go after it and he learns okay I cannot go after the ball I I have set that boundary for him and then as a result we can play games like this and I don't have to worry about them getting into a fight because he tries to take the other dog's ball or they run into each other or anything like that so that's how I do it I call it Duo fetch come here yeah get it nice spin come [Music] on nice job orb nice job guys nice job guys good job out good all done guys all done all done that's it just a little short fetch session all right and some of you guys might be thinking like miles my dog my dog doesn't like to play with me in new environments well you can play with them without a toy right you don't need a toy to play with your dog like for example Arrow yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah right just run around a little bit Chase each other a little bit you don't need a toy to do all this stuff right but really the beauty of coming out here when the weather is bad is just having access to an environment and giving them freedom in an environment that they typically wouldn't have this level of freedom in right again like I said in when it's sunny out when the weather's nice this park gets super busy and so I would never allow them just to do this just cuz there's there's too many people around right but when the weather's bad the world opens up when we were living in Washington state if you guys know Washington State you guys know it's 45 degrees in raining there every day but we would go to the parks like on Lake Washington which is this really beautiful freshwater lakes there's there's beaches all up along like the Seattle side and the bellw side and we would just go to those parks in like the middle of February literally it's like raining and it's super cold out and the parks are totally empty but you get your own private beach literally no one is there you just pull up it's completely empty and you can just hu a frisbee into the lake and your dog's swimming after it having a great time you run around the whole park like it's completely empty and so get out there right next time the weather is bad in your area switch how you think about it like you should be looking at the weather app and being like Oh yeah sweet it's raining today right oh my gosh next week it's going to be raining all week perfect let's go here let's go here let's go here view it as an opportunity right view it as a good thing to give your dogs this this freaking Arrow bro what did you find bro and a final but very important tip for you guys is make sure when you're out training in bad weather you're wearing the right gear like you are wearing the right gear a lot of people don't like training in the rain and in the cold because it's uncomfortable for them like it's physically uncomfortable it's physically punishing and so they don't want to experience again and they avoid training in bad weather CU to avoid that discomfort but if you're wearing the right gear if you've got solid base layers nice rain gear nice rain boots the whole experience becomes very comfortable and you can just focus on having a good time so make sure you invest in some good high quality gear look at these dogs arrows just orb is just standing in the water come on or and another thing guys make sure when you're out training in the rain you bring towels all right very important towels so next time the weather's bad I'd encourage you all to think about it and use it as an opportunity go out into environments that you previously wouldn't have gone to and just focus on having fun with your dog ...
