So today I'm heading back to the dog's home and they've told me about a dog who needs some help. He is an adolescent German Shepherd and I've got such a soft spot for German shepherds. Obviously I have one so I'm probably quite biased. Shepherds don't do well in shelter environments. They like a lot of guidance. They like to be attached to like one or two people. So we often see them developing issues in the shelter. So let's go see and see what we can do to help him. So this is Samuel and he's just so handsome. The main thing that he's struggling with is this frustration redirection of biting onto the lead and also some frustration reactivity towards dogs. Now, it's so common for dogs to be frustrated in a shelter environment and just in life in general. So, first thing I'm doing is slowing things right down and I'm just going to stand still and do real basic skills with him. So, sits and touches. It can be really tempting with a high energy dog to meet their energy, but we want to slow things down and get them to be nice and calm. So, we also do some dog work with him. And we have our dog on the other side of the field. And I'm just practicing having him settle and look towards the dog. And I do a little yes and treat every time he does look towards the dog. A couple times he got frustrated again and started pulling on the lead. But I just calmly redirected him into a down. And we carried on doing our game where he looks at a dog and he gets a yes and a treat.
