what do you do when you're walking down the street and your dog sees another dog do you stop freeze do you turn and run home run out into traffic I like to do a reset what's a reset let's get into [Music] it now I literally couldn't have made this up we're out shooting and there's a couple of deer right now I'm going to do the reset leash on the dog I'm going to step back say come and then go forward say heal that breaks his Focus From the distraction regardless of what the distraction is come keep them on the same side heal I find a lot of German Shepherds like to go behind and they're switching and flipping in each way this left hand look I even have a knot in my leash right here that allows me to have grip on this slippery biothane leash Link in the description come heal good boy it just gives us a split moment to break the focus Focus back to me also practice your most important thing which is Recall come focus on me when you don't have a leash on your dog you pra do lots of practice with this left hand to get and keep their retention come on here it's just one other thing to add into your tool belt of healing of keeping your dog's attention come backward see how I didn't wait for him heel forward I need him to pay attention to me he is a young knucklehead 2 three-year-old rescue German Shepherd that is so easily distracted by life now the the deer are lateral they're they're horizontal to us and so it would be easier at this point to just keep going the reset isn't come something you do over and over and over again unless you're just teaching it as a drill when you're out and about it's just something to get your dug's attention come back to you it doesn't matter the tool you have on Parker's wearing a prong collar he's a big very strong young 90 pound German Shepherd so to see is the dog getting the drill is the dog getting it come I give him a little bit more leash and see is he able to beat that pop because if my hand is down here and I go heal come there's no chance there's no chance for him to learn how to avoid the pressure and ultimately hope for the reward come heal good boy now I walked right through him on that circumstance because he's got to get out of my way I can't be walking out into traffic to try to avoid him he needs to learn to be on my left heel and equally you can practice this on the right come tacos it's ideal if your dog can learn both positions come tacos this works exceptionally well if you have a reactive dog either while they're reacting or before they start to react you want to get them engaged back to you come back to me and it's at least four or five steps make sure they stay on the same side so you're not getting crossed up and heel let's go forward again this doesn't mean that you wouldn't cross the street I think that's a fantastic option when you have a reactive dog it doesn't mean that you don't turn around and go the other way depending on what's coming towards you this is just one other thing to add to your toolkit so that way you have clear communication to your dog it's also going to increase your recall ability when you say come to teach your dog no matter what's going on come back to me when I say heal it means we're going forward in a productive manner if you're not entirely sure what the best tool is for your dog watch this video right here which is going to give you a breakdown of a few different options and what might be best for you and your dog know what you're loved bye meow ...
