y'all I am so excited for this video today because we are going to nerd out on dog gear I get this question multiple times a week it's what gear are you using for your service dog so we're going to talk all about that today we're going to talk about the service dog gear I use that's specific to service dogs and also just my general gear and today is a really great time for me to do this video because I am traveling across the country for 2 months which means I had to be very choosy about what gear I was going to pack in the car because I'm so you know sleeping in the car traveling in the car it's my office uh so I had to kind of limit what I could bring to the essentials so today I'm going to show you all of the essential gear that I travel with and that I use most at home so let's get started so if you don't know me I'm Laura from doggyu I'm a certified guide dog mobility instructor service dog trainer and trick Trader and I've been in the industry for about a decade and a half now so I've been able to use all sorts of gear so I'm really excited to show you my favorite so when we're talking about gear I want to start with leashes because everyone has an opinion on leashes and uh you're about to hear mine so you know that leashes are important to me because I brought three of them with me on this trip and not only did I bring these three but I also have like three more long lines in the car which you know we'll save that for another one um but I brought my three favorite leashes with me so I'm going to show those to you now I love a multi-function leash so my first leash which I have royally angled up here is my bold lead design leather leash and I should say that none of this is sponsored or any of that um though if any of you want to sponsor me you know hit me up uh but so this is my boldly design leash it's a multifunction leash all the leashes that I use for service dog work are multi-function which means that I can uh lengthen and shorten the leash uh as I need to so I might have it short for working and then I might make it long when I'm giving my dog a chance to relieve them themselves or have a sniffy time so it gets much longer uh I can also throw it over my shoulder around my waist all that good stuff I like this leash cuz it's super thin my dog doesn't pull she's pretty small I don't have to worry about having a super strong leash so the thinner the leash for me the better and the leather is just you know I started my career in guide dogs we used leather I love a good leather leash and this one is buttery soft now that I've used it a lot but leather isn't good for everything so I also have a couple other options so this one is also by bold lead design um and it is my uh biothane leash so it's the same concept of leash multi function but it's made out of bohane which means that if I bring it to the beach or my dog gets Sandy or wet or dirty super easy to clean um and it doesn't wreck the leash love that and then my last one is my blue nine leash this is my recommendation for all of you if you have a puppy so this leash so these other two leashes are investment pieces as far as as gear goes but this leash is super affordable at just over 20 bucks uh so if a dog chews it or it gets dirty or anything like that I'm not super worried about it so I love to bring this one along with me too and it's got all the functionality of the other leashes um you know just in a super affordable package so big fan so those are the three leashes that I like to use so when you're thinking about leashes you also got to think about what am I going to attach that leash to so for me um I typically work my dog on a flat collar and the flat collar I use is um this one from tactipup it's got this like super likeo uh super strong Buckle um thick the reason I actually like them is that you can put signage on them that's really easy to read so this one says do not pet uh easy to read on my dog and then I also have my little apple tag on it as well to you know make me feel a little bit safer uh if my dog for some reason to get loose or something like that um you know I have this tracking device now if I'm actually hiking with her off leash that kind of thing I'm going to use a GPS caller for that but this is my just like makes me feel better mostly this just sits in my car and then warns me that I have lost Cool Whip when in fact she's right next to me and I've just left the collar in the car but you know it is what it is so that one's from tacti pup I'll link all this stuff down below so that you can find it later um for your own use and you know when I talk about gear this is the gear that works for me and examples of things that I like it doesn't have to be the gear that works for you I've tried a lot of gear and I kind of tend to go to my tried and true favorites So speaking of this is the blue N Balance harness uh this is one of my favorite harnesses because it is a W Front harness which means we have full mobility in the shoulders it fits great under a service dog vest it's got a front clip and a back clip if you need you know a little bit extra uh control you can put on the front clip or if you're doing a decompression walk you can put on the back clip so it's nice because you have more than one function for one harness great everyday harness but also great to put under a vest if you leave a harness on under the vest um I also really love that you can buckle it around their neck like a collar so dogs that struggle with putting things over their head uh you this is a great one for that and it's got three buckles on it so if it's easy to put on but also take off so we've been in the ocean a lot lately and Sandy and salty so I can easily just kind of uncp the whole thing and not have to drag this wet Sandy thing over my dog's head which I like so that's the harness that I tend to use on The Daily so now that we've talked about harness and leashes let's talk about the vest that I use because I think this is pretty much the number one thing that people ask me about which is where did I get my vest and I got my vest from patience and love um and they do custom vest but also just pre-made vests as well I really love the quality of this vest um it's got these Zippy pockets it so I can put like my medical information in if I need to nice and secure and what I love also about this vest is how simple it is and this is very much on purpose so if you're new to service dogs you may want to like jazz up your vest with like lots of cool colors and sayings and writing all over it and that's totally fine self-expression awesome you do you for me I am trying to minimize my interaction with the public and minimize how often my dog is getting stared at and the more stuff that I put on my vest especially like in small writing or cursive the more people are going to stare at my dog which is hard for a lot of dogs so I keep the stuff that I put on my vest super simple so it just says service dog do not distract in very contrasty writing it's got my logo on the top um and then it says do not pet very very simple you don't have to be up close to read it and that's really really really important to me um so I like this vest a lot if you want to dress it up I put a little little pin on it a little bit of little bit of flare my uh flare um but I really like this one uh the quality of work is is super nice so that's the vest I use also from patience and love is I brought this in just to show you cuz it was in my bag so I have a little leash wrap it can also go on the front of your vest if you wanted to so if your dog is in training you could put that on the front um I like a leash wrap especially if you forget your vest or if for some reason you can't wear the vest cuz it's way too hot for the dog or something like that one caveat I will say with using leash wraps I see people who are putting their leash wrap right near the dog's head and it is bonking the dog in the head while they walk which the dog doesn't like it I don't like to see it so what I like to do is I take my leash shrap and I put it on the upper portion of my m multifunction leash so that way your dog is never going to get hit in the head with their leash wrap and then if I put it around my body I can put it here or probably make more sense if I did it here so people can see it so now it is up by me it has the message that you want to send you can just get one that says service dog or whatever uh and your dog is attached here and not getting hit with it so that's important to me so I like a good leash wrap so along with this I also need a way to carry my gear and my treats and my poop bags and all of that one thing that I really it's like a little pet peeve of mine is I don't like when people hang stuff off of their dog or pack their backpacks with stuff because it's very hard to balance a backpack on a dog and over time an unbalanced pack can cause mu muscle differentiation on either side so I my rule is that I carry everything for my dog unless they absolutely have to carry something so to do that I like to use a sweet fanny pack you know relive my 80s childhood put my cool fanny pack on um and it can hold all my gear so one of the things that's in it is my silicone reusable pouch I love this because I can throw it in the dishwasher I can put wet treats in here um and it's really easy it fits right in here uh this one is by ruffwear my friend just got me a really nice codap paxi one so I might be switching over to that cuz it's also really fun colors and I love something bright this is the pouch that I use for a dog that's already mostly trained because it does have a Zi for closure which can be a little bit more cumbersome whereas if I'm training a young puppy I'm probably going to use my Oli dog bag cuz it's just a little easier to get in and out of um and it's got this little pouch here and I also will carry her collapsible Bowl in here as well cuz again I want to carry her stuff I got a bowl from her especially in the summer so that's where I'm carrying all my gear along with my poop bags very important now I also have a couple things that I use for climate control and because I'm on this trip and I am going going to all different climates I've slept in 17° weather and 90 something degree weather so I have like things for her for both of those situations but before I show you those if you are really enjoying this video and you love learning about service dogs and service dog gear head on down and Boop that like button for me it lets me know that you like what you're seeing and you want to see more of it plus it's pretty positively reinforcing for me so I really appreciate it if you do that now I'll wait did you do it all right all right I'm moving on all right so I have climate control Stu this is a swamp cooler this one is by ruffwear it is well used and well loved basically with this swamp cooler you're going to wet it ring it out and use evaporative cooling to help your dog stay cool what I love about it is you can put it under a vest really easily um and it'll keep your dog a little bit cooler works much better in dry weather than in moist weather nobody likes that word humid humid weather it works better in dry weather than in humid weather because of how evaporative cooling works but it's super light easy to bring around and you can rewet it as it dries out so that's for if it gets too hot if it gets too cold I also have another like slim fitting uh coat for my dog my my dog does not have thick fur so she gets cold pretty easily I like this one from Papa they're not a US company but I think you get them at clean run so what I love about this one is it's got freedom of movement in the shoulders it's got a little tail cutout and it fits under a vest really easily so if I need her to wear a coat and her service dog vest easy peasy and then the last thing that I brought with me that I wanted to show you was boots so boots are important for two reasons well lots of reasons but here's a couple uh so cold weather or hot weather if it's super hot first of all I'm not putting my dog on pavement if it's super hot but if it's mildly hot it can protect the them from the pavement um or if it is cold and they've salted then I can put these on to protect your feet from the salt but it's also good environmentally so we're going to Death Valley later um on this trip and I want to make sure she doesn't get burst stuck in her feed and I can use boots to help protect her from those situations so love the boots these ones are from ruffwear they last a long time the gear that I have from ruffwear has lasted me I mean I have some gear like harnesses from them that are 10 years old that I was using daily the one thing that I didn't bring that I wanted to show you was her dog goggles and I actually am having my husband bring them out when he meets us um in Death Valley because if you've ever brought your dog to sand dunes protecting their eyes is really important if it's windy out and a lot of people will think that the dog go Goggles are silly but there are situations in which I will use them and one of them is in sand because the sand can blow into their eyes and the goggles can help protect them from that so love them for that that all right
