alright everybody in today's video we're going to be working on the fundamentals to teaching our dogs a focused heel the first step that we're going to be doing and a lot of these steps you may have seen in some of my other videos but we want to put them all together in order to get that really nice picture of our dog walking next to us in the focused heel position looking up at our face the very first step that we want to do is we want to do that engagement training and we want to teach our dogs the sit front position looking up at our face remember the intentions of engagement training is to teach our dog the markers which is those sounds that predict a reward so we can pinpoint a moment in time when our dog is right or wrong this is very important when we're doing focused heel because we want to be able to pinpoint the act of the dog looking up at our face ok so these little details are really going to make a big difference so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take Aria don't bring her into the sit front position this is going to be the first step in this series and I want her looking up in my face now when we first teach the markers we're going to have our dogs looking at our hand because they know that's where the food is coming from but we're gonna get it to the point where they're looking up at our face that's the most important part for this step so when we're starting out remember we're going to use two markers our continuation marker and our terminal marker my continuation marker for her is yes and her terminal marker is free so you see when I'm first teaching it I'm keeping my hand next to my face because I want to get my dog used to the muscle memory of looking up at my face after I've done enough of this to get my dog condition to the markers then what I want to do is I want to get my dog to understand it's the act of looking at my face that's triggering the release of the reward and not the act of looking at my hand so I'm gonna take my hand and I'm gonna slowly move one hand away from my face and I want her to continue looking at my face yes and if she does it correctly I'm mark and then I deliver the reward then I'm going to do the other hand I bring it out yes as long as she continues looking at my face I'm gonna mark and reward now what you're gonna see brick that's going to happen the first time you do this is your dog is going to watch the hand because they know that's where the food is coming from just be patient and wait because what's gonna end up happening is they're gonna be looking at the food then they're gonna look at you the moment they look back at you you mark that behavior and then you deliver the reward and you want to get it to the point where you can have food in both hands and you can bring both hands out to the side and your dog will continue looking up at your face free then you can use your release marker and reward your dog this is going to be the very first step you want to make sure your dog has a very nice sit front position and you want to make sure they're good at looking up at your face another portion of this exercise is getting your dog to do what's known as the backwards follow exercise this is where we get our dog to walk directly in front of us as we walk backwards this is going to help with a couple things one it's going to teach our dog to continue to look up while they're walking in order to get the reward and it's going to help us teach our dogs to do that automatics it when halted when we first start we're going to give continual reinforcement as we walk backwards I'm gonna put a good amount of supply in one hand and I'm gonna reward with the opposite hand so I'm gonna walk backwards just like this and I want her to stay nice and close and as long as she stays close she's gonna continue to get the reward and what's really important with this is making sure you're rewarding up against your body if you want your dog to be nice and close to you so don't walk backwards like this and reward your dog far away make sure they're nice and close again getting them used to walking and looking up and then when we stop sorry when we stop we lift and our dog sits down and we reward again so we walk backwards stop and lift and then reward and then what we want to get to the point is where we can walk backwards our hands out of sight and our dog will follow us in that center position exactly the way we just taught it free and then we can release and reward good girl Larry climb okay step two step two we want to start developing our dog's focus in the heel position so we're gonna take our dog and we're gonna place them in the heel position using that power steering the same thing I did with my dog in the sit front I'm gonna do with her in the heel position so first thing is I'm gonna hold the food up by my face again getting her used to looking in this direction yes and then I'm gonna reward now for this one I'm gonna use the continuation marker because I want her to maintain that heel position yes and then reward yes reward and I'm going to do that enough - she understands the concept the nice thing about this one is you're only using one hand not two so not what I'm going to do is I'm going to bring my hand outward and I want her to maintain that focus on my face now yes what you're gonna see is going to happen with your dogs is they're going to follow your hand the first time re we're still doing the exercise so what you're gonna see is her dogs gonna follow it like that and then when they look back at you yes then your reward and even though she's turning her head to get the reward she knows that it's the act of looking at me that's triggering that released to get the reward or that ability rather for her to turn her head since I'm using a continuation marker yes and you want to get it to the point where you can hold your hand next to your dog's face with the Treat in there and they look at your face and not the reward so yeah she's really wanting to look at the reward but now she's looking at my face now she's at back at the reward yes and then I reward her when she's maintaining that eye contact that's what we're going to watch this is a very simple step but it's very important to get your dog to understand that concept of looking up at your face while in heel position now for step three this is what I like to teach my dog the center position so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take re Center I'm gonna have her come into the center position now the same thing you're gonna see how a lot of this there's a lot of repeating what we've been do just in different positions now I'm gonna get her to look up at my face while she's in the center position so we can start again by holding our hands by her face yes and reward using the continuation marker so we have our dog in the center position and we have them looking up at our face same thing we want to get to the point where they're looking up at our face even while our hands are out to the side we don't want them turning their head like she just did yes and as they do it correct we're going to mark and we're going to reward yes now we're gonna take our E and this is going to be the next step and we're gonna walk around with her in the center commanded position I really like doing this because it does a couple things it helps teach our dogs again to walk forward to trust us keeping their head up which is that desired look that people want with they're focused he'll get her to trust me and it also helps because we have our legs to create a barrier on the left and right side and we can use that to teach our dogs to pivot left pivot right and we can start building on those left about turns right about turns by teaching our dogs the fundamentals while keeping them in the center position it's all about that muscle memory so when I first started teaching my dog to walk from this position I'm just gonna walk and continue to reward them as long as they maintain that position so I'm gonna walk and I'm gonna reward getting her used to looking up and I'm also holding the food up by my face the way I was doing before trying not to drop good girl and again the concept or the idea is to get her used to walking looking up and trusting me this is really what I want cuz this is going to transfer over into that focused heel and have you taught your dogs to walk backwards they can walk backwards in this position as well which is really cool once you can get them walking and looking up at you by using the food lure to keep their head up then what we want to do is we want to transition to where we can have them walk in the center looking up at our face with our hands down to our sides so we're gonna walk and we want them to continue looking up just like she is if you need to put your hand behind your back you could do that as well but the idea is that your dog is looking up at your face and if they're doing it nice we three we can use our terminal marker take our time and give them the reward so this is going to be a very important step again to get our dogs used to walking looking up trusting us as well as re-center getting them used to working that automatics it went halted for this step what we're going to be doing is going back again to getting our dogs are you're done searching for stuff go climb what we're gonna do on this step is get our dog now used to being in the heel position looking up and walking but before I do that one of the things that I like to do is I like to transition the dog from the sit front position as I'm walking backwards into the heel position now when I first do this I'm really worried about muscle memory I want to get my dog used to the physical movements that they're going to be doing in focused heel so it's going to be a lot of luring basically I'm gonna be power steering the dog and guiding them exactly where I want when you first do this your dog isn't even really going to know what it's doing it's just gonna be following your guidance but that's okay because we're working on the dog's muscle memory of looking up and walking which is very important you're gonna see in the next step how we're going to start transitioning to where we can get that final picture of the focus peel okay so I'm gonna take Ari again and I'm gonna bring her to this sit front position so what I'm going to do is as I'm walking backwards I bring my dog to the side I turn and then I bring them into a focus heel so again when I'm first working a dog in focused heel I'm basically keeping my hand right where I want my dog and I'm rewarding constantly I'm giving them constant reward so I'm just getting them used to being in this position following me around whether we're turning or we're pivoting getting them comfortable with understanding that position and that movement re so that's going to be real important for that muscle memory and to get them used to stopping and sitting I also like to teach my dog to walk backwards this way bring them back up and again we're just using that power steering getting our dog comfortable walk looking up in the heel position break okay now we've done a little bit of luring we've done a good amount of that power steering getting our dog to understand the heel position are you now what we're going to do is we're going to start getting our dog used to listening to our command heel where we step forward we want them looking up we want that muscle memory and we want to get we want to get the dog understanding this process so the way that I like to do this is you're gonna see all the pieces starting to come together now I'm gonna bring my hand out to the side I'm gonna say the command heelp left foot after I say the command I'm going to bring my hand up warm my dog take a few steps go into the sit then mark and reward and I'm gonna do a bunch of these all right so it's gonna be a little something like this wait so she's looking at me heel then I bring the food up I take a few steps I sit I mark and reward break I bring her back and I'd do it again so you see there's a lot of helping in the early stages he'll then my hand comes up we walk she sits yes mark and reward break and she's not getting the reward until we finished this movement and I also like to change the distance so I might go heel I bring my hand up she doesn't position yes the way that I like I'll reposition her break and get her in the position that I want her to be in so we're gonna do a good amount of these to get our dogs to understand this process so again one more time we have our hand out to the side we say heel we step with our left leg we bring our hand up we get our dog to sit yes and then we reward brick so it should look something like this all right heel three so I just used the terminal marker on that one instead okay so that's going to be that step for this next step what we want to do is we want to be able to get our dogs now to walk in the heel position while looking up at us and not using our hand as a guide to be able to complete this exercise so you have to do a lot of the other steps in order to get your dog to this step are you so when we do this step are you we don't want to have food in our hand we want to have it to the side with no food so now they're not going to be looking to get that food because they know it's not there we're gonna say the heel command we're gonna step forward with our left leg same way we did before but this time we're gonna keep our hand on the side we just want to get a couple steps if our dog gets two or three successful steps without looking in any direction but at our face we're gonna use our terminal marker and then we're going to reward them we want to do a good amount of these and we also want to change the distance as far as how many steps we're going to take each time I might take two steps one time I might take 15 steps I might take four steps but we want to vary it alright so we have our dog looking up at us we're gonna say heel and that's that free good girl very nice releasing her from the behavior so I only took a couple steps right there another trick you can do is you can keep the food in your right hand and when you release your dog reward them from behind your back that'll actually keep their head up a little bit higher so you'll see her she'll I'll see if I can get her do it in this one heel three good so you see how she went behind me to get the reward I also do that with toys because of your dog this goes back to reward placement if your dog is anticipating release and reward behind your body what ends up happening is their head goes up higher because they're anticipating that release and going around your body which will give you a really nice looking focus feel are you good girl so again we're gonna step and do everything we just did he'll then step we want that eye contact three mark and reward when our dogs in that perfect position good girl and I could bring her right back into it again keep my hand to the side three very nice he'll free good very nice this next step is to help our dog to understand how to pivot in place one of the things that you have to do is you have to be able to accomplish this as if you're competing left and right about turns and now the left about turn you're on the same line so if you had a straight line you have to turn on that line same thing if you're doing a right about turn you have to turn on that line so we have to get our dogs used to being able to make such an extreme turn it would be easy if we could do something like this a very wide turn but they want you to be able to turn on the same line so what I like to do for this is I'll teach the dogs how to work their body with that rear-end awareness and movement by doing a spiral exercise what we're going to do is we're gonna have a large spiral that we're going to be following on the ground and that spiral is going to get smaller and smaller up into the point where we are basically having the dog pivot in one spot and we're going to do that for our left side as well as our right side so I'm going to bring her in a heel position depending on where you are this is very difficult you may have to help with a little bit of food during this exercise heel so we're going to step and we're going to walk in a circle and again we're gonna make that circle smaller and smaller to the point where we're pivoting in one place Bree good girl so that was excellent for our going left which is going to help our dog with our right about turn so I stepped off to my left side and the circle going clockwise will help our dog with the right about turn now we're going to do the same thing but we're gonna step off to our right and the circle is going to be counterclockwise which is going to help our dogs with the left about turn so it should look something like this are you good girl he'll step and I'm gonna do that wide circle and I'm gonna continue to walk around and make that circle smaller and smaller free until we're pivoting in one spot and that again is going to help our dog when we start teaching them a left about turn and a right about turn so this video covered some of the basic fundamentals when it comes to teaching our dogs a focused feel I hope you guys enjoyed today's video let me know what you think about video ...
